Thoroughly enjoyed Chirashi dinner at Amami last week. Fish was exceptionally fresh, presentation and taste were excellent. We also ordered one of the more artistic rolls, all dishes were outstanding.

Quick service, open and airy setting. The food was fresh and plentiful. Great setting for a business dinner, the purpose that we used it for, it was hopping on a Tuesday night.

I've eaten Sushi on 3 continents. I've probably eaten at 200 places. I've probably eaten 50 different chirashi.

This is the best chirashi I've ever eaten. Why?

First of all, it was only hamachi (yellowtail), toro (tuna), and sake (salmon)- none of the tako (octopus) or tamago (egg) or even tai (snapper). I've gotten chirashi w/o that before at other places, but I've had to request these be left off. Not here. This was their standard fare.

Second of all, the sashimi is piled high in big slabs. It's true sashimi with generous portions. The sashimi is piled on top of each other (I should have taken a pic of it- sorry). You have to dig to find the rice. You don't get these "bits" of sashimi on top of the rice.

Third, it isn't just rice that's buried underneath, you get daikon with it also. Plus, you get a BIG helping of the white gari (ginger)- you're not going to kill that off with a couple of "chop stick spears". A BIG spearmint leaf also.

Oh, you also get some very tasty (and "meaty") miso.

$19

Green tea comes with all meals, have as much as you want.

The restaurant has been substantially remodeled in the last 6 months. Decor is a bit more modern from before, but still somewhat dated. We walked in and had to sit at the sushi bar (which is what I wanted anyway) as the place was packed (both in terms of people and the space per person). You likely needed a reservation to get a table, but it was a Saturday night.

Look, you are here for the food, not the ambiance or atmosphere. If you are looking for a quiet or romantic evening, forget it.

Service was efficient, but courteous. We were not rushed even though the place was packed.

I looked at the rest of the menu, which I think is reasonably priced for sushi restaurants on the West bay. Plenty, plenty, plenty, to choose from probably 50 different rolls alone.

This is one of the best sushi places I have ever eaten at. If you just want great sushi and at a reasonable price to boot, this is the place. HIGHEST recommendation.

I've visited this restaurant about 8 times. It's undeniable that this is the freshest sushi and sashimi in the south san francisco area. The bento boxes are just average though. During lunch time, especially Friday's, it gets crowded and there can be a wait for a table. Pictured below is the Sushi Deluxe plate. Fish was fresh but I wish there was a little more variety and not duplicates.
