“If you are in the area, this is a must see!!!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 April 2012

When visiting San Francisco, my friends and I decided to go see Safari West in Santa Rosa. Please note that we did not stay on the property, we only went on the tour. I have to admit, I was skeptical at first, but I was completely wrong!!! This place is awesome! Safari West is absolutely beautiful. The tour was not only very entertaining and informative, it was also very worthwhile because you get to see the animals up close and personal. The tour is broken up into a walking tour in the beginning followed by a jeep tour that takes you around the whole property. We were very lucky that the weather was dry and cool, because we were able to see all of the animals on the property that day, according to the tour guide. We were so close to a variety of animals including giraffes, rhinos, antelope, zebras, monkeys, birds, etc. I also liked the fact that Safari West doesn't seem too touristy. Overall, we had an informative and excellent time. Well worth the money! Just try to take a look at the weather before picking the day you would like to go, because these tours operate rain or shine. Being on the jeep in rain or cold weather could get uncomfortable. Also, be sure to book your tickets in advance, because there are limited seats and a limited amount of tours each day. An extra tip for people visiting from San Francisco: Rent a car if you want to go up there for the day and do not already have one. It would have cost a ridiculous amount of money to take a cab to and from Safari West. Having a car will also let you stop at any attractions along the way, including photo ops of the Golden Gate. We also had time to stop in Sausolito on the way, making this day even more memorable.

Took my grandchildren on safari and they loved it especially riding up on top of the jeep. Great guide who knew a lot about the animals and birds. Nice collection of animals.

“African Safari within Sonoma Valley”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 April 2012

If you have ever wanted to experience a photo-shoot safari but cannot afford the time or money to travel to Africa, this is a reasonable 3-4 hour alternative within California -- cameras optional. The safari consists of a 30-60 minute guided walk around a game preserve, during which you go through an aviary, and see cheetahs, monkeys, and flamingos. It is followed by a 3 hour, guided drive by open vehicle through the beautiful acres of this wild game preserve. We chose not to stay overnight on the premises and we do not regret the decision to do so because for us, we were content with the half day's experience. The African animals in the preserve are wild, but primarily animals that were born in zoos or preserves in North America. The predator cats were primarily cheetahs, but they are in enclosures for safety. There are no elephants, lions or tigers here. However, we were able to get "up close and personal" with giraffes, white rhinos, wildebeests, ostrich, zebras, boars, and numerous species of antelope (including many endangered species). We also were able to see baby zebras, giraffes, and monkeys and they were adorable. Because the animals roam freely, visitors are not guaranteed to see each species each visit -- that depends in part on whether the animals are near the rugged trails the vehicles navigate -- but we were lucky and saw most. There are bathrooms when you first arrive, but none on the 3 hour safari. There were a lot of children at the preserve, but we were not traveling with children and our vehicle had only adults -- which we appreciated. Our tour guide was great and would stop anytime someone asked him to in order to get a photo. You are not allowed out of the vehicle, but many times the animals will be almost within touching distance. The scenery is spectacular as well, but it is hilly and rough terrain and you do feel the bumps in the unpaved trails as your vehicle shifts into low gear to go through mud, over rocks, and through standing water that can cover parts of the "road." This was a great once-in-a-lifetime experience. For me, the highlights were the white rhinos and wildebeests, which I had never seen before.

“Great place to experience the animals of Africa”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 April 2012

Safari West was an entertaining and educational experience. My 10 year old son loves learning about animals and had quite the conversation with the tour guide. We started out walking around the aviary and looking at other animals (cheetahs, monkeys) then started the tour by jeep. We rotated who got to sit up top, which was a thrilling experience. There were uphills, downhills, turns where we leaned toward the cliff side of the road, and lots of bumps.

Our tour guide (Danny) was knowledgeable, displayed sarcastic humor, and seemed enthusiastic about his work. We did not feel rushed, and he even planned the tour in such a way as to increase the likelihood of seeing zebra, and of seeing the giraffes. Visiting Safari West was the highlight of our vacation.

“No lions, tigers or bears but still a lot of fun”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 April 2012

We truly enjoyed our night and tour of Safari West. We stayed in one of the tents on the hill overlooking the lake. It was quiet and beautiful. We didn't have dinner here. Instead we drove into Calistoga and found a deli at a grocery store. We brought it all back and ate on the balcony. Great! We were fortunate to have had good weather.
We did have to climb stairs to get to the tent. You cannot drive into the park. They take you via jeep when you check in but you are "a foot' the rest of the time. I believe they do have handicap accessible accommodations
The tour the next morning was good. Although the truck did break down and we had to wait for a replacement. I hope this park continues to grow. I wouldn't mind returning sometime.
