We chose this place mostly based on these Trip Advisor reviews and a perusal of the website. This is not a critique of the hosts Jim and Susan as they were very nice and made super breafasts, but for the life of me I can't figure out why the other reviews don't contain the problems of location and quality that we experienced. First of all, the directions of "go past Lake Hennessy and we are 3.5 miles up the road" make it seem close to the Napa Valley. Well, it's not as it took us close to an hour in the daylight from St. Helena as you wind and climb into the mountain and completely out of the Napa Valley. Do not try the road at night as we nearly ended up in the lake on a few sharp turns as there are no streetlights and the road is narrow. Their address says St. Helena, but the place isn't anywhere close to the town of St. Helena. The rooms are small and spartan and a bit rundown with queen beds as they are too small for king beds. There is no television, no internet service, and it was tough to get a cellphone signal - it's 19th century rooms with 21st century cost. We were in a smaller room and there weren't many other guests there and it would have been nice if they would have upgraded us to the empty Cottage or Rustridge Suite - although they still were queen beds. The entire property is much more of a rustic ranch stay than a Napa Valley experience although they do have a winery and we really did like their cabernet and took home some of their Racehorse Red as it was very reasonably priced at $25 a bottle. There are no restaurants that are less than about a 2 hour roundtrip as the ranch kitchen only provides breakfast plus afternoon appetizers with a wine service which is nice but we missed it as we elected to get an early dinner before returning to the ranch before dark.
It might be different for folks who are really into horses and a dude ranch type of experience, but we really wished we would have stayed in St. Helena and just visited Rustridge as a Winery Tour as we felt that our first trip to Napa Valley wasn't even in the Napa Valley.
- Official Description (provided by the hotel):
- RustRidge is a wonderful retreat from the bustling Napa Valley. Located midway up the valley and due east in the hills above the valley, RustRidge is a large working ranch and winery, and is secluded, peaceful and natural. About twenty minutes by car from Rutherford it is easily accessible to wineries and restaurants but far enough away to truly relax and enjoy the beauty that Napa Valley has to offer. ... more less
