RustRidge B&B / Winery
Ranked #5 of 12 St. Helena B&B and Inns
Reviewed 29 September 2011

We chose this place mostly based on these Trip Advisor reviews and a perusal of the website. This is not a critique of the hosts Jim and Susan as they were very nice and made super breafasts, but for the life of me I can't figure out why the other reviews don't contain the problems of location and quality that we experienced. First of all, the directions of "go past Lake Hennessy and we are 3.5 miles up the road" make it seem close to the Napa Valley. Well, it's not as it took us close to an hour in the daylight from St. Helena as you wind and climb into the mountain and completely out of the Napa Valley. Do not try the road at night as we nearly ended up in the lake on a few sharp turns as there are no streetlights and the road is narrow. Their address says St. Helena, but the place isn't anywhere close to the town of St. Helena. The rooms are small and spartan and a bit rundown with queen beds as they are too small for king beds. There is no television, no internet service, and it was tough to get a cellphone signal - it's 19th century rooms with 21st century cost. We were in a smaller room and there weren't many other guests there and it would have been nice if they would have upgraded us to the empty Cottage or Rustridge Suite - although they still were queen beds. The entire property is much more of a rustic ranch stay than a Napa Valley experience although they do have a winery and we really did like their cabernet and took home some of their Racehorse Red as it was very reasonably priced at $25 a bottle. There are no restaurants that are less than about a 2 hour roundtrip as the ranch kitchen only provides breakfast plus afternoon appetizers with a wine service which is nice but we missed it as we elected to get an early dinner before returning to the ranch before dark.

It might be different for folks who are really into horses and a dude ranch type of experience, but we really wished we would have stayed in St. Helena and just visited Rustridge as a Winery Tour as we felt that our first trip to Napa Valley wasn't even in the Napa Valley.

I believe that the reviewers made a last minute single night booking for our very horsey "Seabiscuit Room." Had they done a bit more research, they would have realized this was not their kind of place. We are off the beaten path, but not an hour from St. Helena, more like 20 minutes. The only way it could have taken longer is if they went through Pope Valley and up over Angwin to get there, even then it would have been 40 minutes. However, sometimes it feels like a lot longer drive than it actually is. Most of our guests drive the road at night, but if you chose not to, we have a big commercial kitchen where you can prepare your own dinner or bring take-out. We do have two restaurants in our area, The Crossroads & Cucina Italiana, both within 15 minutes of the ranch near Lake Berryessa. It is true that there is no TV and cell service is spotty, but we do have wireless internet. What people enjoy most about the ranch is the peaceful natural setting and the animals. It is a place to unwind, sip wine and meet interesting people. The B&B is a comfortable, lived-in ranch house in the middle of vineyards. This is a working ranch and winery not a fancy Napa Valley getaway.

Based on TripAdvisor ratings, we decided to book Rustridge for a couple of days whilst in California this August. It turned out to be an excellent choice.

What we really liked:
- Great hospitality of the hosts, Jim and Susan
- Jim was always around making us feel comfortable, offering free wine tastings of their delicious wines and enterntaining us with stories of his and Susan's life and their very interesting past. The stories were particularly interesting when it came to Jim's ancestry - cowboys, indians, big ranches and even some killing. Very exciting.
- Rustridge is a B&B, winery and a ranch, meaning there is always plenty of good wine to try, paths through nature to explore and lovely race horses to admire
- Have large communal areas, comfortable rooms although we stayed in the Chiles Valley room which was more on the compact side but had everything we needed, and a an outdoor swimming pool
- Breakfasts were to die for! Huge supply for delicious food i.e. fresh fruit, eggs in different ways, sausages, bacon, salats, yoghurts, juices to name just small selection.
- Fresh coffee an hour before the breakfast to take to your room or explore the extensive grounds with mug in your hand
- Lovely wine
- On our first night, there happened to be a Facebook wine-party and we were made very welcome, enjoying wine tasting, Mexican food prepared under the sky and all was free.

Dislikes?
- It was part of the charm as well so is hard to say we didnt like it but Rustridge is around half an hour drive on wavy roads from St. Helena, which makes it very different to the other show-home B&Bs and wineries, but also a pain if you just want to pop into town
- No restaurant on the grounds so good planning needed i.e. grab dinner in St. Helena before heading back to enjoy a walk with glass of wine or just chill by the pool

All in all, we loved it and would come back.

I don't know what else I can say that the other reviews haven't already said....Jim and Susan are excellent hosts. They made us feel at home the minute we arrived. Our group of family and friends took the whole place and we did utilize the kitchen. It was so nice to be able to venture through Napa wine tasting and then come back to a relaxed atmosphere, serve up some fine wine from Rustridge Winery, enjoy the Ranch, BBQ some steaks and not worry about restaurants or having to drive. I'm looking forward to returning again soon!

This place is the best place to go to relax and enjoy the beautiful nature on hundreds of acres of land. The B&B is a ranch-style home with a huge kitchen that you can use if you want to stay in for dinner or lunch. They serve an amazing breakfast each morning. And their wine is delicious! You can walk through the vineyards, up to the hiking trail, past the horses, and on and on it goes. You don't need a lot of time to unwind here. The first fews hours should do it. Jim and Susan are the owners and they make you feel so welcome and at home. My husband and I have been a few times and look forward to going again and again. About 8 miles off the Silverado trail, but so worth the beautiful drive up the mountain to get away from it all.

Room Tip: The RustRidge room is the biggest w/a fireplace
