Description: In 2005, Ed Roehr and Janel Inouye started Magpie with a simple idea - that more sustainable food options can be made readily available to the community, and found within the community. Over the years this idea has grown, and so has the Magpie Family. Magpie café is located in the LEED Certified 16 Powerhouse building at 16th and P Streets with a large patio that overlooks Fremont Park. We have a full bar to compliment the wine and beer lists. We offer menus inspired by the fresh, high-quality ingredients available to us seasonally, with an emphasis on those from the Central Valley and Northern California. The casual atmosphere, interesting food and attentive service are what we have come to be known and appreciated for. The Yellow-Billed Magpie is native to the Sacramento area, and is the only bird found solely on the California mainland. It is easily identifiable by its bright yellow bill and contrasting black and white coloration. We aim to be like our namesake bird - familiar, yet unique - a distinctive part of our community.

Located on the pedestrian-friendly R and 15th St block, run by a husband and wife team dedicated to cooking with the freshest ingredients, this is our new favorite place in town for casual dining. There is always a selection of vegetable dishes at the counter, and their specials are always a treat. Find a table, place your order and food will be served. Noise level can be high, and the line long on Fri/Sat nights, but come early and you will be rewarded. No reservation and closed on Sun.

Magpie is a wonderful example of the slow food movement in Sacramento. The food was fantastic! We ordered our items to go and were happy to wait and listen to the great music they played. My only hesitation is that it is a bit pricey. I know quality costs, so chances are good I'll return, but I won't be able to go as often as I wish.

We arrived early for dinner before a play, and were glad we had. This place really fills up in the evening, and the food is the reason. Both of us had delightful salads followed by home-made pasta dishes with local produce. The selection of wine by the glass was good. The service was efficient and friendly. It was a memorable meal.

Magpie opens early in the morning for breakfast, goes into lunch, and then dinner. After, the catering group comes in, in the wee hours of the morning to begin again. I have had all three meals at Magpies and have been to events they have catered as well. The food is very good across the board.
Magpie is our favorite Sacramento restaurant and we usually go at least one weekend night. We always start with the roasted mushrooms, bean puree, truffle oil and crostini. I have eaten around the world and I find the mushrooms some of the best I have come across. In addition to our other dishes, we also always include the vegetable dish. Usually consisting of eight to ten veggies, roasted in olive oil they are accompanied by two dipping sauces: chef’s choice. Would that more restaurants offered such a choice of vegetables that change weekly and seasonally.

Magpie’s service staff comes across as friendly, warm and most important Happy! The pleasant company creates an energy that is essential to the enjoyment of good food. Nuff said
