I have always heard that this is one of the best -- if not THE best -- railroad museum in the United States. For someone who grew up in the west and who likes western railroads it certainly seemed like the best railroad museum to me. The museum covers so many important railroad subjects and excels in telling the story of the transcontinental railroad and the people who made it happen. The fact that there are many historical engines, rail cars and other artifacts from that early period on display is amazing. There are model railroad displays, engaging activities for kids, a wonderful theatre and so much railroad history on display. Nearby there were steam-powered tourist trains leaving on a regular schedule. My only disappointment was that the Santa Fe Warbonnet F units were not on display.
