Don't miss the California Railroad Museum in Old Town Sacramento. With restored engines, dining and sleeping cars, the golden spike, a mail car, model trains, and more, there's something to interest everyone. Friendly, informative docents are located throughout, explaining points of interest and answering questions. My favorite was the dining car, filled with displays of the china and menus from the glory days of transcontinental travel. Other favorites with our group included the high speed car, and the cab forward engine. Plan several hours for a visit -- the place is huge!

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to this train museum. The lower level had beautifully restored engines and specialty cars. It is an amazing collection. There were people walking around in period clothes who were very knowledgeable.

The top floor has a area for children to play with toy trains. There are also displays of the various sizes of trains such as HO, N, Z etc.

My grandpa loves trains! He's like a kid in a candy store here! You can drive a virtual reality train for free. Lot of real size trains here, you can jump aboard and see what it was like to dine on the train. Flashbacks to the old times.

Allow an hour or more for a good visit. You will need to be able to climb stairs to go aboard the trains.

This special museum and the train museum in York, England must be the best two railroad museums in the world today. There’s a truly outstanding collection of early transcontinental engines, carriages and other rolling stock in mint condition. Several trains are open and you can walk through them including a mail car, sleeper car and dining car with a great display of period china. Everything is extremely well presented and there’s lots to admire for all ages. You don’t have to be a train enthusiast to appreciate and enjoy this unique place. There’s even a fascinating model railway upstairs. The staff are both highly knowledgeable and helpful. When you visit, please support this wonderful museum by becoming a member!
