“As good as my fellow railroad retirees said it would be!”
Reviewed 8 April 2012

This railroad museum has the reputation of being perhaps the finest in the nation. It has a large collection of railroad locomotives and rolling stock, passenger equipment, and associated paraphernalia. The new building showing off this collection is impressive, the model railroad collection interesting for young and old, and the dining car china collection extensive. Most, but not all, of the displays are from railroads operating in California. The bookstore has a large collection of books and souvenirs. In short, a pleasant stroll through the nation's railroad past for $9 per adult. The very realistic, though simulated, train movement on the Pullman car exhibit certainly brought back memories of riding a passenger train and could give someone who had never been on a train the feel of the real thing.

“Who knew?”
Reviewed 6 April 2012

Even if you think you aren't into trains this place will surprise and enthrall you. A little history, many interesting exhibits, and an amazing number of train engines and cars. How did they get so many in there? You will surely be surprised and have an enjoyable and interesting few hours. We have taken our grandchildren as well as many out of town visitors and they always say the same thing, "who knew".

“Amazing - even a train that simulates traveling”
Reviewed 4 April 2012

All inside is very nice - wonderful with entire trains to visit. There is also an option to take a train ride down the river (additional price) - but it is a fun trip when the weather is not too hot.

“Outstanding Exhibit”
Reviewed 3 April 2012

This is an amazing collection of locomotives and cars. Knowledgeable docents, most of whom are retired railroad people, are everywhere and eager to answer questions and share their knowledge. I spoke with the engineer of the Southern Pacific cab forward locomotive about when he ran it on the Truckee run. Fascinating stuff.
There is also a huge exhibit of electric and toy trains upstairs that keeps the little tots amused for hours. Kids under 7 years are admitted to the museum free.
