Lots of shops, great atmosphere. Nostalgic and fun for the whole family.

This place has a huge variety of great shops. It's a shoppers fantasy land! Bring a backpack to carry your purchases in.

We were quite disappointed as this was really touristy and felt like a theme park. Much better places to go in Mid Town especially to eat and areas like Placeville to visit - Go gold panning its fun and free !!.

We brought the grandkids down on a sunny day from just 20 miles away to go for a bike ride along the river. We decided to rent bikes ($8/hr) at Practical Cycle (right there in Old Town) as well as a pull-along trailer ($5) for the younger grandson. They provided helmets for each of us. Also, for only $2 more we updraded to electric bikes and I have to say it was a GREAT decision. I haven't had so much fun on a bicycle since I was a kid! You can pedal along just like normal or, with the twist of a wrist, you get a power boost. You can actually cruise along at 20 miles per hour top speed! The path wound along the river, not too hard for a seven-year-old, and then across a bridge and along a bike path through brambly trees. We had a picnic at the river and were entertained by an otter trying to catch salmon. Amazing. We will do this again and again and have invited a group of friends to join us next time!

In theory, this should be a great place to visit. Next to the Sacramento River, historic area, lots of shops and restaurants. However, the place is ridden with panhandlers trying to get change from the tourists to support their alcohol and drug habits. Nearby are several "flop houses" for the "homeless".

If you can get past that, the river cruise (Hornblower) is fun. Several restaurants (Joe's Crab Shack, The Rio City Cafe are right on the rover) are decent places to eat. The Firehouse restaurant is also pretty good. A trip to the Railroad Museum if you have children (or even if you don't). is very informative. Close to the Sacramento Amtrak station and public transportation.
