“Great atmosphere”
Reviewed 29 February 2012

Completely in the style of this old living museum of a village, the Cottage Hotel is something special. Entering the lobby takes you 100 years back in time. Called the staff because there was a small mix-up, but they handled it perfectly. We stayed in the Hill St. Cabin, which was a nicely improvized piece of metal and wood moulded into a great accomodation with awesome interior decoration and furniture. A lot to see, inside and outside, we had a great time.

You don't have to be Prospector Pete or Dirt Bike Bill to love The Cottage in Randsburg, although those aren't drawbacks either. Set in a truly historic mining camp - about $5 BILLION in gold (todays prices) taken out since the 1890s - and massive "off road vehicle" areas, The Cotage makes Randsburg is a totally fun place to visit for a few days.

The Cottage is on the edge of "downtown Randsburg", which means it's about a 3 minute walk from the General Store (get the "Black Bart" sundae!), the White House (so authentic that I'd run if I was dealt aces and eights!), and - best of all! - "The Joint," where owner Olga continues, at age 100, to run the show. The Cottage itself is part of a small complex of the hotel, a separate wing with rooms for larger groups, a restaurant (open some weekends; check first), and the hotel, with an enclosed hot tub and game room (a great pinball as well as the hot tub), fire pit, outside tables, and porches. It has a couple of other "cabins" for larger groups, but I didn't see them from the inside, but they look wonderful, too.

The hospitality of Goat (the owner) and Skater and Scrappy (you need to meet them to know) is felt from the moment you walk in. They probably won't be there - they don't intrude, and come by only to make sure guests are happy - but right at the door is an old Coke machine with water and soda for guests. Inside is a "90s" lobby, a small breakfast room, and the hotel wing, with all four rooms and, down the hall, a nice bright reading room with a great small library. The whole palce has been totally redecorated in absolutely perfect fashion, with dozens of antiques (including what might be the original PBX switchboard for Randsburg, from the 30s!), and comfortable rooms, each slightly different. The rooms aren't large - about 12x12 - but very comfortable, with polished hardwood floors and small but complete bathrooms (showers). The bed are comfortable, althought very hard (I think ours had a plywood board under it), and there are a few small other pieces of furniture. Dish TV is there, with smallish flat screen monitors, and there is free WiFi in each room.

Dogs? You have dogs? Our two guys (Duke is about 110 lbs and Chase is "only" 50) were very welcome, and loved the place. As other guests filtered in, several others had dogs, and Scrappy even brought a small bed in for Chase (too small) and then, when she saw that, some thick quilts for our guys to lie on at night. Just for that, The Cottage gets a "Five Paw" status!

Breakfast is casual, and not even "continental" but "our house" style. A large refrigerator is stocked with sweetrolls, juice, cheese, yogurt, bread, balogna, ice cream and more, and a small pantry shelf has some canned goods. You help yourself, which can also prove handy at night, since usually there's no place to eat after the General Store (great food!) closes at 5 pm. Coffee and tea are available all day, although if the pot empties, you're free to make a new one yourself.

All in all, I haven't been at a small inn or bed and breakfast that I enjoyed as much as this one. People in town are friendly and make you feel welcome, and it's a peaceful place off the main road where you feel the "living ghose town" ambience from the minute you drive in. And, if you're a "Chopper Chicks in Zombietown" fan, you'll see why Billy Bob Thornton and a bunch of other film stars like Randsburg...as do people like you and me.

Go. Relax. Maybe find some gold. As Huell would/did/will say, "THIS is California's Gold!"

Room Tip: Ask Scrappy to pick one for you.

I spent 1 night at the Cottage Hotel in late April with my wife and son on our way up to Kennedy Meadows. We stayed in the Hill Street cabin, one of a couple of old mining cabins near the hotel that the owners have renovated. They did a great job in the renovation - old materials were reused where possible, giving it the feel of an old mining cabin, without the bad smell or horrid mattresses that are unfortunately common in desert lodging. The Hill Street cabin is on the outskirts of town (such as it is) and has a spectacular view from the balcony and huge picture windows in the kitchen. I've stayed in much worse for the price ($125). We were very satisfied and hope to return. I cannot comment on the other rooms except to say that I walked through the main hotel building, and everything looked very nice and tidy.

We spend time with super clean and super nice. Friendly folks, and a charming town. If you want luxury accommodations, well, go to the Bellagio in Las Vegas.... The hotel was completely deserted but a note on the reception desk said to phone and 10 minutes later Scrappy arrived.
The rooms are very comfortable and staff service is very friendly I hope to back again this place.....

We loved our stay at the hotel that we are have already booked a room for Western Days in September. The hospitality was overwhelming. The quaintness fun, rooms clean and fresh. Meals both breakfast and dinner were great. Thank you to Goat, Scrappy, and Skater for making my husband and I feel like family.

Room Tip: Scrappy picks a room that she feels is good for you.
