“Very nice but,”
Reviewed 24 April 2012

Beautiful property, well maintained with excellent service. We stayed 2 nights, room 468 at a most reasonable rate. But,

1. Ossa Bucca (sp) at the Terrace Resturant was way, way too salty. I noticed another table near ours returned their entres for the same reason. Let the diners select the salinity level.
Fish the previous night was excellent.

2. Maybe I am cheap but I object to $25 valet parking charge, if you need the money please include in the room rate.

Room Tip: Room 468 is quite nice.

Very pleasant location and property. Room spacious, nicely appointed and WiFi available. Grounds are lovely with beautiful views of the valley. Sunday brunch was fine enough but nothing outstanding. Live music after 10am in restaurant for brunch. Pleasant. Only complaint is the $25 valet parking fee...there is NO self parking.

Room Tip: Ask for room in main building if you do not want a long hike to outlying rooms. However the walk is...

We spent one night at the Langham to visit the Huntington Gardens and Library. It was our first stay at a Langham Hotel, though we had enjoyed high tea at the London property last year. The gardens, interior courtyard, rooms, staff and service were lovely. Travelling from the cool Pacific Northwest in April, we particularly enjoyed drinks and dinner on the bar terrace as evening fell, and breakfast at the lower terrace restaurant, again outdoors. Because it was a short stay we didn't use the pool, workout, or spa facilities. Our internet service was fine. Our only 'complaints' is that the food arrived a little cool (we were eating outdoors) and my husband, a coffee-holic in the AM, had a hard time getting his cup refilled at breakfast. Overall a great stay.

Room Tip: 3RD floor room overlooking the garden/grounds was serene with a lovely view.

We've stayed here every year for 7 years now. The grounds and hotel facilities are top notch. It's a classic, luxury hotel, but not stuffy or snooty at all. The beautiful pool has landscaped grounds surrounding it and the terrace restaurant. We stay in the Lanai building so our kids can walk out to the pool for a swim or over to the terrace to have breakfast. It is so completely relaxing to eat at the terrace - you don't feel crowded or rushed - there's no better way to start the day.

Another plus is that even when the hotel is full, it doesn't feel overrun. We could still get lounge chairs for 4 at the pool and still felt calm and relaxing. The health club is great, though small. It's much better than most hotel gyms with clean, maintained equipment. My wife and enjoyed having the tennis courts right on site. We played and then I joined a pickup game with other tennis players as well.

Room Tip: Rooms in the Lanai building are perfect if you have kids that want to swim.

My husband and I spent three nights here in early February 2012. First, the good stuff: this is a beautiful property in a lovely neighborhood of Pasadena, with a wonderful, quiet ambience. The furnishings in the public areas are elegant, old-world style, as befits the Langham Group of hotels.
The rooms are lovely, with the whimsical and perfect addition of a copy of Alice In Wonderland, which I took the opportunity of re-reading. This was a perfect touch, and shows attention to detail.
To add to the serene atmosphere, there is a central courtyard which is filled with a gorgeous garden, and the landscaping throughout is lovely. The staff is efficient, and works with grace and a smile.
The restaurants serve excellent food, and room service is prompt and courteous. The flagship restaurant, Royce, serves state-of-the-art French cuisine in a modern, elegant atmosphere. The chef is talented and adventurous..... this restaurant deserves a Michelin star or two. Seriously.

Now for the not so good: when we first arrived, we were assigned a unit with a shared, garden patio.
One of the guests from nextdoor was smoking on the patio when we arrived, so we opted to change rooms. The second room reeked of some sort of cleaner; I think it was furniture polish, that was totally overwhelming. The second room did also, but we decided to accept it and just aired it out for an hour or so, and asked the maid not to use the cleaner during our stay. She complied with a smile.
I have never in my life had a hotel room that smelled like that, (we are world travelers) and a different polish would be so easy to substitute.
Only other compaint is their policy of nickle and diming their guests, which another reviewer mentioned, and unfortunately it's true. My husband was disgusted to have to pay through the nose for decent Internet access, although it was included for one night. The room was without coffee service, so we requested a set-up for our stay. I believe the charge was $40.00 or so. Why in the world would you charge your guests for this option at such an up-scale property, when it is something that is routinely provided in even down-market chain motels? It just puts the wrong message out there, and guests feel taken advantage of.
And lastly: when we left, I filled out the comment card and handed it in, checking the box where it asked if I wished to be contacted. I marked it "yes" and gave it to someone at the check-in desk. I never heard a word.

Room Tip: Families should definitely ask for a room in the annex. The rooms overlook the pool, and in the summ...
