“Beautiful hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 April 2012

We stayed in February for a weekend and had a wonderful stay. Breakfast was included and great choices. Beautiful area and as a runner enjoyed running around the area and looked at all the gorgeous homes. The grounds are beautiful and the downtown area had many restaurants and shopping. Would stay there again anytime.

I have stayed at this hotel many times on the Club Level. There are some wonderful aspects - the grounds, the room and most of the staff. There are some things that could be updated (e.g. towels in spa are really old). On the latest visit, service took a turn for the worse. A woman in the Club lounge (Joan) was going table to table asking guests what room they were in. We were asked twice with an accusatory tone. It really felt off and made for an unwelcoming environment. It's such a shame since all the other Club staff are so great. I don't really feel like returning after that experience (and I've been to the hotel about a dozen times as a guest).

I hosted a 3-day meeting at the Langham recently, and got rave reviews from our meeting participants. We booked the Georgian Ballroom which had no windows, but it featured a beautiful vaulted ceiling. I read that the ballrooms were saved from the original hotel that was razed in the late 80's for earthquake retrofitting. The hotel was built back in 1991 to look like the original Huntington circa 1908. Acoustics in the ballroom made it difficult for our group to hear, so I wouldn't book that room again, but that was the only problem. The catering was special. The lunch buffets had interesting dishes...not your run of the mill stuff. We held an opening dinner in the Lobby Lounge that has nice views out onto the property and to the cityview in the distance and then we retired to the Tap Room which has comfortable indoor and outdoor spaces for after-dinner drinks. The service was top-notch...someone always available at the front desk, no waiting. We booked a team builder to the Gamble House nearby. I've lived in Los Angeles for 21 years and didn't know about it until the meeting planner suggested it. Wonderful Arts & Crafts jewel with interesting personal tours given by 2 docents. We had lunches out on the Georgian Terrace overlooking the pool which was a treat for my guests. The guest rooms were nice, but not as unique as the common spaces in the hotel. I booked a deluxe king which was an upgrade, but the room didn't seem any more special than most standard rooms I've booked in similar hotels. Still comfortable, and the linens were nice...fully stocked mini-bar. We secured a $169 mid-week room rate for the group event which was a great value for such a special hotel. We left on Friday and saw that the hotel had become much more busy with tourists as well as Los Angelino weekend get-away planners. We ate dinner one night in a private room at Cafe Santorini which featured wonderful swordfish (might be the juciest, most delicious swordfish I've ever had), and wonderfully cooked and seasoned filet mignon. We booked a long table at Vertical Wine Bistro for after dinner drinks, and that was a hit. Meeting got a 3.8 rating out of 4.

I've lived in Southern California for over 20 years and I never knew how great this hotel is. Decor is old world elegance, service is top notch, linens are Frette brand. The whole time I'm walking around I felt like stopping people and asking them: "Pardon me, would you happen to have any Grey Poupon?" for those of you that remember the Grey Poupon/Rolls Royce commercials. Pool/jacuzzi are beautiful, spa is great and I loved the Carrera marble bathrooms.

Room Tip: the corner rooms are nice and bigger with lots of windows to see the property

While the rooms are comfortable enough and the bathrooms were your typical white-and-marble, double sink luxury variety, the Olympic-sized, heated pool is something our kids felt worthy to write home about. Great for a dip, or a lap work-out, even in the unusual cool Spring temps we experienced this year, the pool was surrounded by weary East Coast travellers, recouperating from jetlag and catching a few rays, sprawled under gracious, pink-blossoming trees and majestic palms.

The grounds of the previous Huntington Estate are, as to be expected, grand and glorious: carefully-maintained copses of healthy, mature trees; a peaceful, verdant interior court, complete with burbling fountains; a secluded spa surrounded by lush vegetation; a covered wooden bridge, featuring oil paintings in the pediments depicting local & historic California highlights; and a pleasant Japanese garden to stroll through. The lawns stretch out dramatically before this Grand Hotel, offering great distant vistas for excellent borrowed views, especially from their best open-air, covered terrace/ lounge, The Tap Room. This spacious balconied hide-away, appointed with comforable couches for seating, served us the best Caesar salad we have ever enjoyed! (Be wary, however, of the voracious well-fed squirrels who brazenly also partake of the roasted nuts provided with your beverages....)

One of the best services is their shuttle, ready at your beck and call, to take you into Pasadena for dinner, or to a superb must-see -- the spectacular Huntington Botanical Gardens Art Collection and Library -- a worthy way to spend several days of any vacation in Southern California.
