We wanted to have a nice night out while we visited our family. We went to Negri's for appetizers and drinks and returned to our room. We were in the room for less than an hour before we discovered bedbugs in our bed. We were horrified and immediately left the hotel. We informed the manager but he rudely dismissed us. The next day we tried to receive a refund and the manager not only charged us for the first night BUT the SECOND night as well. It was a horrible experience and I was extremely disappointed. Do not stay at this slumlord property.

Room tip: Stay Away!!

Hello to all the Tripadvisor Community,

It is with great frustration we feel obligated to respond to this retaliatory and untruthful review.

We enjoy the role Tripadvisor can play in providing both new and returning guests with an insight into the quality of our property and friendliness of our staff.

Unfortunately in some instances the review system can be abused and used in a retaliatory or threatening manner. This is certainly the case with this review. This guest arrived on a sold out Friday night for a two night stay which had been booked well in advance. Upon arrival-- and before entering the room-- they informed our front desk staff they did not want the room because they wanted to (and I quote) "save some money and stay at my mom's house". Our cancellation policy for weekends is 72 hours. Our front desk staff explained to the guest it was too late to cancel without incurring a charge for both nights---but as a show of good faith and cooperation we offered --and completed in full--a refund of one of the two reserved nights. This was not good enough for this guest and we were met with threats of a bad review if we did refund both nights in full. We refused to be extorted and as a result the guests left the hotel, went to dinner, came back into the room for one hour, and then returned to the desk with a litany of false complaints in the hopes of getting the second night refunded. We again refused this blatant attempt and, as they had threatened to do, two days later this bad review appeared. They never even stayed the night.

It should be clear to anyone reading our other reviews we are constantly singled out for our clean facility. It should also be noted we have never ever had bed bugs in our Hotel and the room they describe in this review has had guests stay in it for many nights before and since and not a single complaint about bedbugs (or any bugs for that matter!) has been registered.

As always we want to take a moment to thank our longtime return guests and hope any new guests reading this review will be able to see through it for what it is.

Sincerely,

Marc N.

$277 may seem a lot for an upscale motel room for three guys on a motorcycle trip but this was TWO rooms each with queen bed; shared bath and separate living room and a real kitchen! No tripping over each other here! Ground floor and hear overhead guests walking about, FYI. Gorgeous location in a small town that really feels away from it all. Overall, a thumbs up.

Room tip: Avoid ground floor rooms as overhead footfalls can be heard.

Hi kristy77a,

You choose a great area for your motorcycle trip. We hope you were able to make the ride over Coleman Valley Road from Occidental to the Pacific Ocean. It is consistently rated one of the top drives in all of Northern California. If not, then maybe a return trip is in order!

We hope the trip out here from New York was all you had hoped and that yuo can make it back out west soon.

Thanks,

This is not a 5 star hotel, but is so neat and clean that you would think it is. The front desk was very accommodating. Occidental is not so large and the hotel is within walking distance of all restaurants and shops. I stayed in the 2 room suite which was reasonably priced and well outfitted with a kitchenette, sitting room and 2 bedrooms. The wifi made it perfect.

Room tip: All the rooms seemed equal, but 1st floor are problably quieter.

Hi michaelbD778DX,

Thanks for the comment regarding us being neat and clean. We work very hard at it and appreciate the positive feedback.

We also love that you enjoyed being able to walk to everything Occidental has to offer. Hopefully you could make the Friday Night Farmers Market here in town. It is a perfect way to start the weekend on a Friday evening.

Please make it back some time we would love to have you.

Sincerely,

My wife and I stayed three nights over the Fourth of July weekend. We'd been through Occidental many times, as our kids have gone to a nearby summer camp for years, but we had never stayed.

The Occidental Hotel overlooks the small town of Occidental. It's a motel-style establishment, nothing too fancy, but a very nice place to stay if you're in the area. Our room was neat and clean and the staff was friendly and helpful. The town of Occidental is small enough that you can walk end-to-end in 5 minutes or so, but it contains a few nice restaurants and shops. Also some grocery stores if you want to eat in-- (which you could as our room had a microwave and mini-fridge)

All rooms face the street as the hotel is situated on a steep hill, but traffic noise was no problem in this small town. We had a king room which was plenty large for the two of us. The hotel has a pool, but we didn't try it out (evenings, even in the summer, can get a bit chilly).

For a nice hotel at a reasonable price, you'd be hard pressed to find anywhere better.

Quaint old-style motor lodge with charming colorful outdoor pots and hanging plants, located in a gorgeous woodsy setting, with a friendly staff. Since the building backs up right to a mountain, I don't believe there are any private decks or balconies, but there is a very nice outdoor pool in a quiet, serene setting with comfortable seating choices. Our room had a pool view (across a parking lot) and was spacious and comfortable, though a bit musty (moldy?). The toilet/tub room was barely large enough to move around and had very dim lighting. The lavatory sink/counter was within the room itself, right as you walk into the door, with minimal but adequate toiletries available. Also, a convenient mini-fridge, microwave and coffee pot were provided. And, one of the best things about Occidental for us - you can walk (down a bit of a steep driveway) to several restaurants, all within 3 blocks. Try Hazel's - we thought it was pretty amazing!
