Enjoyed dinner here before recent show at the Fox theater. The two of us shared 4 tapas plates, including the Piquillios Rellenos (awesome), the Esparragos (asparagus) Panceta y Queso (fabulous!), Pork Skewers (very good), and Smoked Albacore (incredible). Many of the dishes we shared, & observed at other tables, reminded us of dining in Spain. Nice selection of Spanish wines and excellent service. Generous portions & quick servings between dishes. Rustic, casual atmosphere. As with any tapas restaurant, it can be a bit pricey when all the individual tapa plates are added up. But we expected as much & had a really great meal and fun dining experience. Highly recommend.

We went to eat here (3) while we were in the neighborhood. Décor and lighting inside is dark and had more the air of its bar. Service was polite and acceptable. The paella verduras ($42) we had was a bit on the over-burnt side at the bottom and sides but was tasteful otherwise. We also ordered pescado crudo ($16) and pincho moruno ($13). We also had the tapas mixtas appetizer ($17). For dessert, we had affogato (ice cream/coffee - $10) and turron (a hard confection made of almond/honey - $4). It was a nice experience but we are probably not going back.

We've had tapas from similar restaurants in the East Bay and agreed that we'd come back here to try other items on the menu before going back to other Spanish restaurants. Quality was quite good - loved the strong paprika in the aioli on the patatas bravas, albacore was yummy, and the fideua with duck was spot-on - and the cocktails were excellent. Fun vibe and a great addition to the Uptown area.

This restaurant is very expensive, has mediocre food and bad service. A mixed appetizer for $17 was less than what you would expect for one. A paella for two was completely burnt and not enough for one person on a severe diet. Service was no where to be seen. I would have sent the paella back except that the waitress didn't return for 30 minutes (and she never asked how the food was).
I am not such a critical person. This is the first negative review I have written.

We needed a place near the Paramount theater for a pre-symphony meal. Duende had space, but the reviews of it were mixed, so we were curious how WE would feel. Meh...The cabbage salad with pistachios was ok, nothing special and had too much dressing. The ensalada de verduras was much more interesting and colorful - a good choice. The paella arroz negro, seafood with rice made black with squid ink, was pretty good, but again, nothing special. Service was great! The decor lacks any beauty, is rough hewn and hideous. It's hard to carry a conversation here.
