Spend a few hours wandering around this City and you'll see the old and new . There is restoration work doing up the old railway station a history museum showing times back to the original Settlers. On Grant Avenue there are many shop windows to look at a great Toy shop at the lower end of the Avenue with excellent staff who cannot do enough for you.At the other end of the Avenue there is Copperfields Book Store where you could spend hours wandering around. Further down the Avenue there are numerous restaurants, barber shops a winery and you could buy a lawnmower on the High Street.

Old Town Novato is a nice area for a relaxing meal. Others have covered this pretty well. If you go when there are festivals or farmers markets it makes for a more interesting visit. It's very safe and clean, and you can generally park within 1/2 block of where you're going.

I live here, work here, and then I drive to Petaluma to enjoy a vibrant downtown.

Empty storefronts, dive bars, a half re-developed theater, it's painful to see.

There have been several attempts by developers to develop the downtown area, and it really needs it - we've done everything from charrettes where the community votes on the plan that everyone could agree on - but we have a very old-school local government (well, just two of them, actually - the other three actually want to see Novato thrive, but all efforts get "poo-pooed" on by the two nay-sayers) that doesn't want to see Downtown Novato develop and thrive.

I will say, with the new bus depot, which is absolutely beautiful (much better than that little ghetto stop that used to be there) and the addition of a new wine bar, micro-brew hub, and some outdoor café seating, it's been wonderful to see downtown come to life in the recent year or so.

Keep it going Novato!!

There are terrific restaurants and neat shops. I love the antique shops and wonderful book store. They have a Gluten Free bakery that is perfect in their selections.

Old Town has got it all... except it hasn't. Given the state of the economy, the idiotic local government, and the horrendously greedy landowners, this town is just barely hanging on. Wow! Lights in the trees! Why not add clowns and strolling minstrels? But get rid of that dive bar. And that liquor store on the corner. And that We Habla check cashing store. And that albatrossian bombed-out non-theater (whose historic sign has vanished, probably sold on eBay). But the city offices are brand new... not that anyone works in them. A bit of an embarrassment, as small towns go.

Wonderful small town main street with several shops, cafes, restaurants, and local bakery. Don't be put off by the lack of parking. There are several public parking lots one street over by the city building.

To call this part of Novato "old" is adding a new definiton to the word. It is only old if we compare it to the sprawling prefab commercial outlets on the outside of town. Yes, there are some upscale restaurants, delis, and boutique shops but that doesn't make this part of town necessarily old. But, then again, when so much of America has been taken over by Walmart, Kmart, Costco and the innumerable fast food joints any street that has architecture going back to the 1950's could be called old. Unless you love to spend money in overpriced shops there isn't much to see or do here.

Don't bother, keep driving and go to Petaluma. One good restaurant, Grazei, one good bar, deBorbas and that's it.

but I found a lot to like in Old Town Novato like visiting the thrift store and a wonderful antique shop, the Mi Pueblo Mexican restaurant and the Trek winery. I hope to review them separately.
