Couples night and walked in at 7:30pm on a Saturday night. Wait for a table was 10 minutes but I do recommend to plan ahead and make reservations [open table]. Live 2 person band [bongo drums and guitar] in the bar with a couple TV with the games on. Restaurant was very inviting for parties of 6 -8 and also romantic for couples. Staff was very friendly and our food was delicious. $36 for lobster and $19 for carnitas. We also order the plantains and banana rice. We both thought it was a great value despite other reviews suggested over-priced food. Buttered cake was excellent. A glass of champagne and spicy margarita was awesome.

No views because the restaurant is located in the Fashion Island parking lot. $6 for valet parking of a quick walk for free.

Sat outside and enjoyed delicious chips/salsa that was so fresh! Guacamole was fabulous and you should try the carnitas street tacos! Great way to spend a sunny socal afternoon!

Rick Bayless, as seen on TV apparently, opened RedO in xxxx in a large purpose built unit just away from the main Newport Centre mall, Fashion Island. Having eaten at his excellent Xoco in Chicago expectations were high but although the food and service were very good I was expecting rather more. Maybe it is the local palate - Mexican food in these parts is often surprisingly lacking in oomph - maybe it is my palate, but my fellow diners agreed that it all lacked heat.

The menu combines 'traditional' (or rather Bayless' take on the familiar) Mexican dishes with a selection of steaks from the substantial to the utterly absurd. What exactly does one do with a 32 oz steak - box it up? The albacore cervice was fresh and well flavoured but perhaps 'cooked' for a little too long to be bordering on chewy. The beef enchilada was very good - but perhaps a little lacking in imagination. The carnitas, however, were just excellent - good pork, rich mole, individual flavours. Desert, a dark chocolate ganache with mango sorbet, arrived looking spectacular but disappointed mainly because the ganache was served too cold. Chocolate needs to be at room temperature to be at its best - so it improved through the course, but alongside the perfect mango sorbet it was another 'close but no cigar'. Signature margaritas, no complaints, but still not the outstanding drink I might have hoped for.

RedO - as seems to be the fashion - accompanied dinner with a solo performer backed by a band in a box. The place is large enough to get a table far enough away from the entertainment to talk. By the standards of most restaurants it wouldn't be fair to say RedO isn't very good indeed and the bill is surprisingly reasonable - as long as you avoid the 32 oz steak.

Just walking in is a delight for the senses. Not just the smells of wonderful dishes being prepared, but the decor is really inviting and intriguing. We were seated in an area that on a nice sunny day would be open to the outdoors. For this particular evening, the tall curtains were drawn giving a more private and intimate atmosphere. I had the Camarones al Mojo de Ajo. In keeping with the wonderful decor, the dishes were served with the same flare. Very appealing to the eye and they were very good to eat. I wouldn't rate this as excellent for myself personally because you really have to like the different take on traditional Mexican dishes that this place offers. I was honestly hoping for a little more traditional and less artsy. But I would definitely try this place again knowing full well what to expect now. And I wouldn't hesitate to at least stop by the bar and try one of the many tequilas that are offered. They have a wonderful display as well.
