Dropped in without a reservation based upon the trip advisor reviews. We were seated at a small table in a very busy location, which was understandable given our lack of reservations.
The service was good, but the food mediocre to poor. Man wife had the crab cake dinner and a salad, both of which were disappointing. I had a salad and the fried calamari, which had received a great review. It was very chewy and basically tasteless. We also had a fried string bean dish, that was also disappointing.

This is a relatively expensive place with mediocre to poor food.

Thank Michael L

We arrived around 6pm. No reservation. We were told we could seat ourselves in the bar area wherever we wanted. So we found a tall bistro table and reviewed the menu. Then we saw someone leave who had a window seat in the same area. We left our bistro table to go get the window seat and a different server told us that "anywhere" didn't include window seats as those were reserved for those with reservations. Alrighty then. I get it but make sure all staff apply the same rules. They felt bad and comped our appetizers. The clam chowder seemed to have a lot of unseen pepper.

Now's a delightful time to have dinner on Newport Harbor's bayfront at the Rusty Pelican if you love seafood. With Labor Day past, the vacation crowds and abundant tourists have cleared out. So you can enjoy a pleasant, romantic dinner, and hear one another without having to elevate one's voice. If you want to sin, be sure to order their garlic bread as an appetizer; it is from a special recipe and fans have loved it for years. This week they are featuring as a special Alaskan Halibut, which is always special, with a tasty sauce. Almost all of their fish are NOT farm fed, so they are more nutritious and healthy for those of you who follow health-conscious diets. There are abundant tables and many booths, all affording bay views as this post-Labor Day ambience sets in.

We ate upstairs in the bar area of the Rusty Pelican rather than in the downstairs formal restaurant and had a truly delicious meal.
The service was first class, the menu choice was perfect and the waitress took the time to explain the dishes. Coming from the UK we had never heard of barramundi fish and we were pleased we tried it because it was really tasty and came with a delicious sauce.
We loved this place and will definitely go back when we return to California in November.

Thank SteveAD
