We were there in Sept 2010 but forgot to place a review so this may have changed since then.
Ok this is not the ritz, and some of the rooms are a little in need of some tcl but it's budget prices, good location, warm, comfortable and above all clean.

The bar was pricey but the range of drinks was good, and the fire pit, once we had edged ourselves closer was lovely to while away a few hours after a long day as a tourist, having eaten out and put kids to bed, to soak up the night air and remember the days events was really great.

Hotel and bar staff very good and helpful, no complaints at the time.

We would stay again if we went back.

Thank you for your review. I'm happy to hear that you had some great times in Monterey to reminisce about by our firepit. The temperatures are warming up again here, so it's the perfect time of year to plan a trip back to Monterey. Esteban restaurant was recently voted best happy hour in the Monterey County Weekly newspaper for 2011. I reccommend coming in from 5 to 7pm for great discounts on drinks and tapas. Thanks again for the review and we hope to have you stay with us again.

Sincerely,

No noise issues for us. We found the accommodations to be really comfortable, and a step beyond most mid-priced hotels in terms of decor and general comfort. Just at the edge of downtown (calle principal), a few blocks from fisherman's wharf, and walking distance to cannery row. You'd probably pay much more for similar accommodations closer to the bay. We didn't use the heated pool, but it looked nice and many other guests did take dips while we were there. Front desk staff were really nice - and we saw them getting abused by a guest who was a really pest (and perhaps deserved a slap across her face...). Ample parking. Windows that open (!). Comfortable bed. Free wifi.

Room Tip: if you like a little breeze as we do, upstairs is probably nicer

Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review. I am very pleased to hear that you enjoyed our hotel. We would love to have you come back and stay with us again. Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend there is also a free city trolley offering transportation from two blocks from the hotel making it even easier to get to Fisherman's Wharf and the Monterey Bay Aquarium. The pool is also looking better than ever with brand new pool furniture that has just arrived. Come back and see us again soon.

Sincerely,

We got a discount via Living Social: $220 for one person, two nights; regular rate would have been $352. I stayed in Room 107 which had old, noisy heat that didn't work. The door sticks. Feather pillows are provided; if you want polyester, you must ask for them. They also provide robes, but again, you must ask for them.
Room 107 is on a corner and there is noise from the parking occasionally at night and early in the morning when the staff arrives.
Spano Spa is part of the motel. Had a nice Sweedish massage with Amy, $70 which included a $30 discount from Living Social.

Room Tip: The quietest rooms would be upstairs on the corners, e.g. 286 - Queen, 291 - Queen, 256 - Queen, 257...

Thank you for staying with us last year, and for taking advantage of our $99 Living Social special. That was truly a great value with the spa credit. I am very happy to hear that you enjoyed the Sano Spa, and I hope that you were able to enjoy our Spanish tapas restaurant Esteban as well. Regarding your room I am very sorry to hear that you experienced some noise both from outside the room and from the heater. Thank you for letting us know of these issues now, though I wish that we could have had the opportunity to address them for you during your stay. The room type that you stayed in is our Cozy Queen room, which is most economical and also our smallest room type. We also have a number of other room types, which are more spacious than the cozy queen. We would love to have you back to stay with us again, and would be happy to personally recommend a room type and location for you based on your feedback. Please feel free to contact me if I can be of any further assistance.

If you are deaf or nearly deaf, then you will not have a problem. If your hearing is other then the above, then good luck. The walls are paper thin; hopefully, the person next door to you will not wake up at 3:30am to make phone calls (like he did with me) because it will sound like he is sitting on your bed. Likewise for the people walking above you if you are unfortunate enough to be on the first floor. The room is small and the heater is noisy. There is nothing here that warrants upwards of $300 per night.
