Party was 2 adults, 2 teenagers, 18 & 16. This was in a quiet, residential location about 5 - 10 mins walk from the sea and very near other attractions. Room was lovely with balcony overlooking a small wooded area. Humming birds were feeding just outside our room. Good breakfast, loads of parking, thoroughly recommended.

Was very happy to find this nice, inexpensive motel (don't let the name fool you!) in a quiet area of Monterey. Close enough to the attractions but out of the high-traffic tourist areas. Our room was very big and comfortable, with two queen beds, plenty of towels and extra pillows.

If you have a choice, skip the fireplace unless you know you're going to use it, and go for a room with a balcony instead. The fireplace takes up the space where some of the windows would be, which made the room a little dark.

The continental breakfast was quite good as those things go, with very fresh baked goods and a variety of cereals, bagels, fruit, etc. Even the coffee was decent, with half and half available as well as non-dairy creamer. There's also a deck out in the back which was quite pleasant.

The staff were very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful.

Besides being a great value, the Colton Inn offers many nice touches that are hard to find in a hotel. Spacious rooms with usable table and enough chairs for a family of 4. Free Wi-Fi, free DVD rental (good selection), nice continental breakfast and afternoon snacks, updated appearance. I can confirm the positive TripAdvisor reviews from earlier.

The location within walking distance to downtown Monterey and Fisherman's wharf worked well for us, especially to conveniently view the 4th of July fireworks without fighting the traffic. You could even take advantage of the free MST Trolley to get to Cannery Row and the Aquarium without having to drive and pay for parking.

I would say that getting breakfast in the lobby area is somewhat crowded (you need to take the food back to eat in your room, for which they provide trays). But the tables and chairs in the room afford eating there, and our room even had a refrigerator and microwave that allowed us to make use of leftovers in following days.

The service ranged from friendly to somewhat indifferent, but always satisfied what was being asked for. The neighboring fire station was not a problem (even on a holiday weekend!)

Overall solid recommendation.

We enjoyed our stay at this clean hotel. We had a 3rd floor King room with a fridge and microwave. Our window faced the direction of the bay which was about 7 blocks--a 10 minute or so walk--away. Our only problem was that there was a very active firestation across the street from us! I was sick one day and we counted 7 times that the fire engines responded to a call -- sirens screaming! But, the sick day was otherwise quiet -- we didn't hear noise, not even plumbing noise, from other rooms.

This is a great location, a Trader Joes/Peet's Coffee is just around the corner and some of the parking at the hotel is covered. You are near an art musuem and lots of historic buildings. The staff are pleasant and knowledgable about the area. We enjoyed the complimentary breakfast although the area is very cramped and you have to take your food to your room -- that's okay because they do have trays. They also provide coffee all day and fruit and cookies in the afternoon.

Just an FYI that none of the hotel has air conditioning -- not even the offices so try to not to be there in a heatwave! This is a lovely area and we'd definitely stay again at the Colton.

  • Liked — Great location, homey atmosphere, part of the neighborhood
  • Disliked — Nearby firestation

The inn was clean and well maintained. The room was decently sized with a microwave, fridge, VCR/DVD player, iron, etc. There were free DVDs to borrow at the front desk (excellent selection). The complimentary continental breakfast was also decent. The front desk is closed 11PM-7AM.
The location was about a 12-minute walk south of Fisherman's Wharf and about a 30-minute walk from the Aquarium.
The inn was decent, but nothing to write home about - probably a bit overpriced for the amenities offered, but I didn't feel totally ripped off because it was a nice stay.

  • Liked — cleanliness, free DVDs
  • Disliked — price a bit too much for services offered
