Owner description: Self-guided 2.7 mile walking tour around 46 historic buildings in downtown Monterey.

I am a huge fan of Monterey history and encourage visitors to avail themselves of the unique opportunity to enjoy CA's most historic city. Sadly, most of the historic adobes and other buildings are rarely open to the public due to budget cutbacks. Colton Hall is regularly open and a must see. The walk itself does not take that long, as Monterey is a very small town. If you don't mind seeing the adobes from the outside (sometimes the gardens are open such as the Larkin House) the path is a very good way to soak up the history of Monterey.

I did this a couple years ago and enjoyed the walk about Monterey town and looking/visiting the buildings from the California Mexican Era. It's a level walk. There are guides of the sights available. It's FREE!

Good way to learn about CA history and the States earliest urban center/Capital. Some Buildings as old as those on the eastern seaboard.

This is a MUST for those interested in understanding California history! I have this as one of the extra credit assignments in my undergraduate course in California history. One can truly feel the history on this tour. Seeing the Larkin house with the small adobe in which Wm T. Sherman lived--right across from Colton Hall--is a step into the past. I strongly advise this walking tour.
