What though it was a small room—best to step outside to change your mind—it was, nonetheless, adequate, with sink separate from shower and W.C., and if you didn’t mind asking the desk clerk for a top sheet (strangely, missing beneath the luxurious duvet), it worked, withal. And dinner on the deck overlooking the river was leisurely, delicious, ultimately graced by candlelight . . . all that a couple in a luxurious mood and appreciating privacy could ask.
For this, we paid a pittance by Sonoma County standards, a bagatelle, considering the ghosts of patrons from many generations past (how the dining room, with its vaulted ceiling, must have resonated with delighted clamor, with echoes of music and seductions contemplated and achieved).
Some places dwell in a time warp. This is one of them. Come and enjoy it for yourselves.
