Reviewed 17 April 2009

The Mermaid Inn (the actual homepage is hiding under www.mermaidinnmotel.com) is a basic equiped hotel, with nice size rooms and a very convinient location. For the prize you pay you recieve a good value. Except a lot of other places there is no charge for wireless internet access. (However in some rooms the signal might be less good.) Especially for long stays the location, close to a supermarket and nearby a laundry shop, and the train station, is convinient. The AC is a little bit loud and the windows not the newest once, but that is not a big problem. You wouldn't like to stay there for a "romantic trip to California" (spend more money on that, its not elegant and compfortalbe as a 5 star one!), but otherwise I can recommand it if you need a place to stay overnight or even for longer for work or as a starting point to explore the Bay Area. I was satisfied with the place, the service does only get 3 points, but only on default because that there is no restaurant or nice breakfast area within the hotel. On the other hand you don't need it, the supermarket and several restaurants are nearby. The staff is friendly and does help you with your questions.

I stayed at Mermaid inn for one week, being in the area on a business trip, and I was overall pleased. The rooms are big and with everything you need in there: double bed, night tables, table, three chairs, TV, refrigerator, microwave, bathroom.
When I came back in the evenings, the room was always tidy and clean.
The owner's daughter who often stays at the reception desk has a very annoying attitude that skims over rudeness, since she makes you feel like you are stealing her time, instead of putting you-the-guest at ease.
The surrounding area is definitely uneventful but this is not an issue if you are not there for entertainment. All the essential was there so, from this point of view, I didn't really have anything to complain about.

We booked a room at the Mermaid Inn for our son's graduation from Stanford. We booked months in advance. Upon arrival we found that our forethought had earned a room in possibly the noisiest, most noissome section of this benighted facility.

Our room overlooked El Camino and we were treated to constant traffic noise. The pictures on the website, and the descriptions, promise luxury accomodations...luxurious by no standard I'm familiar with. The staff was distinctly uninterested in making an effort to improve the quality of our stay. On a positive note, we could tell our room had been recently cleaned by the cloying odor of disinfectant that remained.

I made the mistake of being beguiled by the rates charged by this establishment and allowing myself to be convinced of its quality from the website. In this case I don't know if we got what we deserved, but I think we got less than what we paid for.

Give this property a pass...head down El Camino a few miles and spend a few dollars more to stay at the Red Cottage Inn.

We would NEVER think of staying there every again. We gave the property a chance because of the price, location and its convenience to my daughter's home in Menlo Park, as we truly only needed a place to sleep.

While the room was acceptable, bathroom needed a bit of better cleaning, carpet worn, however, micro and refridgerator practically new, the maid service was attentive to our request for a coffee machine immediately [see below for explanation] AND the Front Desk [manned by the Residential Manager] truly NEEDS to attend to her overall attitude!!

We arrived at the hotel on Friday at 4:30pm. In-between mono syllable grunts, the Residential Manager made us feel that she was actually rendering us her personal favor checking us in and that we were imposing on her personal time on a Friday afternoon. She could not find our reservation, [which we had made over the phone a couple of weeks ago with an ex-employee who was VERY service oriented and helpful], did not offer any information with regards to the layout of the hotel and the time and location of the 'promised' continental breakfast, and seemed reluctant to our request for a room facing the courtyard as oppose the main street, as per your TripAdvisor recommendation. She finally just handed us our keys and a remote for the TV and that was that!!!. We have never had such a reception before. Because our room was missing the coffeemaker, we personally reported this to the Residential Manager and requested for one. She told us to tell the maid service the next day, and did not offer to place one herself so we could have coffee the next morning in our room!!

Continental breakfast, although advertised on their billboard, on their flyer in the the room and on their website, WAS NOT available the next morning. Our request for coffee, as a minimium as we had no coffeemaker, was met with a 'Residential Manager stare', then a 'Residential Manager grunt' for us to bring our coffee mugs. Reminder: we had NO coffeemaker thus no mugs. However, thankfully, my daughter had loaned us mugs so we could use it as and when we get our coffeemaker. Time??? 10am!!!

Our 'mission' next was to personally look for the cleaning maid to request for the coffeemaker. Thankfully, he was not only VERY service oriented professionally, as expected, but he was very efficient and a new coffeemaker was placed in the room upon our return to the room within the hour. We had walked to the nearby Starbucks for breakfast and coffee!!! This was the ONLY service commendable.

After a three day stay, we checked out at a very reasonable hour in the morning - 9:30am on a Monday. Once again, NOONE was at the Front Desk and only upon hitting the 'calling bell' three times, did she, the Residential Manager struggled to the Front Desk looking sleepy, still in her PJ and totally disrevelled and very unprofessional. She checked us out, again with mono-syllable grunts, and ONLY upon our request did she produce our credit card receipt!!! Imagine if we had not insisted, it would have been an open credit ticket!!! Thankfully, we have travelled widely and knew that we needed to have a 'Zero Balance' upon checkout.

We WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS HOTEL TO ANYONE!! Please place this NO NO on your site for The Mermaid Inn. We plan to return to Menlo Park many times in the near future, and would once again, stay at the Best Western a block away, although we would have to pay double the price.

As the saying goes: YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!!

I was up till 10 pm trying to find decent lodging as I traveled down El Camino Real from San Francisco. EVERY HOTEL north of here seems to be filled up for the night.. I was ready to find anything.
I was pleasant ly surprised. The still had a metal key to open the door with not the computerized card. The room was clean as was the bathroom. The bed was average but they supplied plenty of pillows. The facility looked slightly worn but seems as the owners wanted to maintain a decent place to stay. There were no bugs no ripped sheets etc. The decor was a little mismatched a la Home Depot but that seems minor. Kinda had the mid mod look with the neon and such. The continental breakfast was nothing special but there is a big 24 hr. Safeway supermarket next door. In a pinch this place will do. I was pleasantly surprised to find this much better than I thought it would be.

  • Liked — It had vacant rooms
  • Disliked — no real complaints
  • Tips/Secrets — In a pinch this place will do just fine. I've seen much worse for much more.
