Had lunch there today with a friend. Superb friendly service, good prices, and excellent food. Started with home-made crusty bread and foccacio with a tomato/garlic/nutty spread. We ordered the gorgonzola gnocchi and the penne with melanzanne (eggplant). Had their scrumptious chocolate pudding cake for dessert. All the food was fantastic - and home made - just the way our Italian mothers used to make it. Don't often dine out at Italian restaurants 'cuz we eat Italian at home. But will take the train again from San Jose to Menlo Park just to go back to Gambardella's!

My husband and I have been dining at Gambardella's for many years. It is our "go to" nice Italian restaurant. It is warm and inviting, with the wood-fire oven visible behind the bar. They have delicious pizzas in addition to the classic Italian fare. Since we have gone so often, we now usually order the specials, which never disappoint. Last night I had the petrale sole served over artichoke risotto. Delicious! Lots of big fat capers on the sole which was breaded and sautéed with a lovely piquant sauce over it that was just perfect. Hubby had a rigatoni with a spicy sausage sauce. They serve two kinds of bread, plain Italian and house made focaccia with a spread made of roasted red peppers, garlic and olive oil (anyway that's my guess as to what's in it!).
There is a full bar and a nice wine list. If you eat lunch here on a weekday I do not recommend eating outside because it is across from the commuter train and it is really noisy when the train comes by. We always eat inside for that reason. Even though the decor is upscale, we see families every time we go.

Alway spoilt for choice between pasta and the specials. Don't miss the shitake mushroom salad and the chocolate fandango. Wonderful warm service. A special restaurant
