The Hill House Inn looked fine online. Good location, great scenery nearby. But the reception was cool and disinterested. The room was dated and a bit tired. But the major concern was that we had a mouse in our room, not seen but heard and with evidence of droppings and eaten crackers later. Not good.

If you are looking for an ocean view and some amenities...don't look here. Our first negative experience was checking in, with a dour and unfriendly front desk employee. Not setting a great tone. But we gave it our best and proceeded to our room on the second floor. It had 2 queen beds but the mattresses were lumpy, the shams were torn old comforters with hardly any feathers remaining, no balcony, no view, no fridge, no breakfast or coffee in the lounge, and we never found the ice maker.

The room smelled strongly of antiseptic, and it was stuffy and hot. With that said, it's only saving grace is it's location to the town which is walking distance.

We reserved two nights, but left after one. I'm sure it was nice in it's glory days, but it needs a total renovation.

Patty f., first let me apologize for you being disappointed in your room and the condition of your room. I would also like to apologize for the smell in your room. As you stated the hotel is in need of updating and we will be doing that. We want all of our guests to be happy and want to stay with us again. We also want to keep the old world charm it is known for. I hope you will give us another chance once we have updated the hotel.

On the positive side, we received a warm welcome, there is a beautiful garden outside and the view of the sea was spoilt by a bush. The room was a suite which was a bonus as felt very spacious however it definitely needs updating and smells musty.

With the perceived elegance from ads, etc. this hotel has not kept up with that scene. It is clean and decently kept, but has no restaurant, no bar, no real lobby, the rooms are a bit small and are looking their age.

We had one night here while visiting the area.
Lovely seaside town with many choices for dining.
Room was big and clean with a decent sized bathroom.
Receptionists at both check in and check out not at all friendly - quite surly.
No breakfast offered which for the price paid for the room was both disappointing and inconvenient.
Would recommended but hunt around the area for an alternative if possible.
