We stayed in the Driftwood Cottage for our anniversary -- a perfect little hideaway. Quiet nights, wonderful breakfasts delivered to the room, all-in-all a very restful place. We will absolutely stay here again next time we're in Mendocino. I'm uploading a lot of photos so you can get a sense for the place.

Alegria is so cozy, beautiful and welcoming and almost like staying at a good friend's beach home. It was kind of funny because there were 4 people celebrating birthdays at Alegria that weekend (and I was happy to count myself as one of the lucky 4). The innkeepers provide exceptional service - tending to all these details - wine, flowers, newspapers in the morning if you want them, etc. Our queen bed was comfortable and we had a nice wood stove to keep us warm, not to mention a terrific deck overlooking the ocean. The breakfast each morning was delicious - fresh fruit followed by stuffed french toast one day and then fresh fruit and a scone and egg strata dish the other morn. I love that they provide really good local coffee (and teas) in the room, along with a coffee maker. We also enjoyed hearing the sound of the waves crash at night while lying in bed in our room (Sea Breeze), and having champagne and telling stories around a crackling fire in my sister and bro-in-law's room (Pacific Suite) next door. What a perfect way to celebrate a birthday!

We are local and could have stayed anywhere along the coast, but we chose Alegria to celebrate our dual birthdays. We were familiar with Alegria from the Whale Festival and figured they would have good food, as they always do. We enjoyed the lovely gardens and the short walk to the beach. We stayed in the Sea Breeze room and had our own little balcony to look over the garden, the river and the ocean. We left the door open all night so we could enjoy the sounds of the surf. And we enjoyed the fire in the gas fireplace without the hassle of lighting a fire. We still got to enjoy the smell of real wood though from our neighbor's fireplace. The hot tub was wonderful. The lemon bars and chocolate chip cookies were available any time we wanted and are fantastic. I've run out of adjectives to describe the breakfast, OMG Good! Cream cheese and blueberry stuffed French toast and sun dried tomato sausage. Yum! Eric and Elaine really understand hospitality. We could not have had a better experience.

Room Tip: Our room in the inn upstairs was great. You are separated from the neighbors sound-wise, but on the...

I LOVED the Aloft room at Alegria's sister property across the street, Raku House, and could easily--and longingly--imagine making it a home base for a stay of several days or longer. We have stayed at Alegria's oceanside accommodations in the past (Cove Cottage and Sea Breeze) and altho' they offer wonderful pampering (inc. ocean and garden views, and a sumptuous full breakfast), our experience at Raku House was a stellar one. Since Aloft commands the entire top floor of the charming house, it has a bright, airy spaciousness that provides a guest with the feeling of instant relaxation.

There’s convenient off-street parking next to the house and access to 3 of the 4 rooms inc. the Aloft is from the rear of the building. A pretty little garden area is adjacent. The Aloft contains simple, non-fussy furnishings and has a cheerful, pleasing decor in soft blues, yellows and greens. It has a queen bed plus 2 twin size beds, one situated in an alcove area. There’s a cozy sitting area in a dormer--a perfect spot to relax and talk or enjoy a glass of wine (wine glasses and corkscrew provided in the room). During the day it’s also a nice, bright place to read, but at night the lighting there is more conducive to conversation than reading. The table in the room is large enough to comfortably dine at or to engage in card or board games (provided in the room). The comfort of the chairs at the table would be enhanced if they had seat cushions. The bathroom allowed enough space to move about and stash our toiletries/cosmetics. The shower stall is ample, but the one “complaint” I have is that the showerhead can’t be angled upwards enough so if you remain standing, you have to position yourself right up against the built-in shower seat in order to get the full stream of water. Water pressure and temperature were fine. The little window in the bath has a neat surprise view of the iconic church across the street!

We appreciated the numerous amenities in our room including ample closet space with plenty of hangers and a luggage rack, coffee maker, selection of coffees/teas, bottled water, microwave, refrigerator (located in bathroom), bedside clock, hairdryer--and flashlight (very practical when walking back from dinner). The electric wall heater was sufficient to keep our room at a comfortable temperature when outside temps were on the chilly side during our stay. The web site indicates that Aloft offers “a peek at the ocean”--but it turned out to be more than a peek from our window, and it was delightful to watch the impressive waves rolling into the cove!

The newspaper (if you like) is left outside your door each morning and a Continental breakfast is delivered at about 8:30 a.m.--which is a bit later than we’d prefer, but one can always buy some breakfast pastries or rolls in the Village (shops, galleries and restaurants are a very short walk from the inn). The breakfast basket included a carafe of coffee, choice of organic juices (o.j. and apple) and 4 wonderfully delicious--and still warm--apple and raisin biscuits. I could have eaten all 4 of them myself, they were so good!

Since Raku House is located along the main road into Mendocino Village, I thought that there might be some traffic noise at night. I was prepared to use earplugs, but found that I didn’t even need them. Only occasional, distant sounds could be heard from our room and there was nothing to disrupt a peaceful night’s sleep.

The innkeepers and owners have been so cordial, accommodating and helpful during our past stays at Alegria and our experience this time was no exception. Altho’ it had been years since our previous stays, we were welcomed back like old friends. Elaine and Eric have put their hearts and souls into providing guests with “the best of the best” and their efforts shine throughout Raku House and Alegria. Their properties remain my first choice of lodging in Mendocino Village.

Room Tip: If you can, take advantage of the special offers during non-peak times--check their web site.
