It was a beautiful day in Mendocino for this lovely walk to the Light Station. There is a small and interesting museum on site. There is a tiny aquarium that is fun to peek into. The cottages were nice to photograph and the museum inside one of them is interesting. Lovely views of the ocean waves.
After you leave the parking lot, you can actually hear the elephant seals on the rest of the walk down to the lighthouse. What a relaxing and peaceful sound. I really like lighthouses of all sizes and shapes. This one was one of the smaller ones I have visited. It has a small museum. The staff (light keepers) housing has been turned into vacation accommodations, but lighthouse visitors may still access the separate restrooms and picnic facilities.
We saw deer on the lawn, which was an added bonus.
The parking lot is medium sized, but we were able to find a parking spot on a weekday.
Although it is not as spectacular as The Point Reyes Lighthouse, it is much less crowded and worth a stop.
A bit of a walk to visit but worth it. 1/2 mile one way down hill. Love the historic cottages. Interesting museum at the actual lighthouse.
The sign says it is half mile to the lighthouse. I think it is closer to a mile, but well worth it. Three houses that provided for the keepers of the light and their families have now been converted to vacation accommodations. They appeared nice from the road.
The scenery around the light was typical of the Mendocino coast line. Neat little gift shop at the light.
The parking lot says that it's a half mile walk from the lighthouse but as others have said due to the slope it feels longer. There is handicapped parking closer to the lighthouse which some members of our party had to use. The lighthouse itself is small and quaint with the upper access unfortunately closed during our visit. The light itself was gorgeous. The view was nice-- but if you have limited time not as stunning as some other parks we visited nearby. All in all a worthwhile stop.
The light station is gorgeous, but the walk there is the real treat, the half mile from the parking lot provides crazy good views of the coast, while going by the original light keeper houses, one of which is restored as a free museum, two being used as vacation rentals. Feels like a moment stuck in time, from the early 1920's. Great walk, and view, well worth the time.
