“Great scenery”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 July 2012

Extremely varied scenery. Tall, extensive grasses, ocean/cliff views, walk down steps to a beach. This is an excellent place for great scenery.

You'll feel like you can take off like a bird from these stunning, wilnd-swept bluffs.

“Breathtaking”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 May 2012

This location starts out looking like it will be a nice little walk but don't let that fool you. The views of the ocean alone when you continue along the guided path are absolutely gorgeous; maybe the best in the County! Get near the cliffs and look down at the b e a u t i f u l scenery - the clear blue/green water as it meets the beach below. If heights are a problem for you, just sit down at the cliff's edge and enjoy for a while. The path continues on through the pygmy forest and that's something else entirely. This is well worth some time on your journey through Mendocino County -- it's a gem.

“A walk in the forest”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 April 2012

A wonderful, easy trail starting under the bridge into a forest, almost mythical in nature, of coastal trees, including Redwods. Went almost to the end of the out and back two mile trail with a seven and a four year set of boys. They loved it. Took dog along. Saw sign on return that dogs were not allowed. Daisy, the dog, loved it too.

“Pygmy forest is strange and wonderful”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 March 2012

The Jughandle State Reserve is a great option for those who would like a moderate (will take a few hours but not a full day) hike with a very interesting geological/ecologic twist. The area features an "ecological staircase" where uplift and erosion have created three tiers of ecoystems--coastal plain at the parking lot, then redwood forest, and finally the pygmy forest. The views from the coastal plain were gorgeous, the redwoods were as majestic as ever, but the real treat is the pygmy forest on the third tier, where soil conditions are so poor the trees are all in miniature.

At the parking lot you can pick up a interpretive guide that will explain the various flora that you see along the way.
