We were originally booked at absolutely awful place in the Santa Monica mountains but thankfully were able to get a reservation at the Inn at Playa Del Rey instead! It certainly made for a wonderful experience for our first time in Los Angeles. Located in the beach towns, it has a wonderful, laid back feel to it, accentuated by the lovely view of the nature preserve from our balcony. The afternoon wine reception in the spacious sitting area with its wide picture windows and fireplace makes you think you are on Cape Cod instead of Los Angeles. The staff were all very friendly and helpful with directions, reservations, etc. Everything was clean and sparkling. Rooms were large with a nice whirlpool tub to unwind in at the end of the day. If you want to enjoy Los Angeles without all the noise and hustle of a big city, I would highly recommend a stay at the Inn.

The presentation of this b&b is gorgeous, but underneath and lurking in corners is a building in serious need of some revamping.

We stayed here in the 'off' season (January) and booked a two bed room 'suite' for $440 per night for nights (we had our teenage on with us).

Our son's room faced the main road and was extremely noisy. His toilet blocked on the first night there and wasn't fixed till the day we left ( no apology); this seemingly happens often.
His tv was an old 48cm analog - wasn't even flat screen.

While we were there they advertised rooms at $129 per night, really poor taste considering they had me sign an agreement to pay $440 the night before.

Basically, at $129 per night, this place is a bargain. But at $440 they are luring people with the facade of opulence that just isn't backed up by reality.

Below is our pros and cons:

CONS:
VERY noisy air con - and you need it, as only other choice is opening unscreened windows onto wetlands. We woke every time the air con switched on overnight.

Bathroom fittings; we had two rooms, toilet in one was blocked almost the entire 3 nights we were there (not even an apology from staff). Shower in one was so forceful it was like showering with a fire hose and the second you had to run around to get wet.

Old fashioned shower curtain was moldy inside.

Make-up service didn't attend to our room till almost night time.

No fridges, tea/coffee making facilities in rooms, not even a glass to have a drink of water out of. These things were available 3 flights down however.

Free wine and nibbles for an hour between 5 & 6, yes, nice touch, however, 2 x 3 seater lounges clearly don't cut it for a full house of guests, so a bit uncomfortable with people standing around waiting for a seat.

Same problem with breakfast. Nicely decorated room, but not adequate enough to hold full house of guests; people were being turned away while we ate, so we also felt like we had to hurry so others could have breakfast. Of course the poor sods couldn't even make themselves a cup of coffee; the room was just too packed.

Carpet in our room was badly stained, and many many marks and areas where paint coming off the walls.

I know Americans like to travel with their pets, but a DOG in an already over crowded dinning room at breakfast?

PROS:
Very tastefully decorated, if you don't look too closely it's gorgeous.

High quality bedding and linen, would have slept beautifully in this sumptuous linen if it weren't for the air con rattling all night.

Staff were always friendly and helpful.

Breakfast was very crowded, and there was very little choice, but what was served was nice.

All told, at the right price this is a great b&b, but if you are looking for luxury, go elsewhere.

Room Tip: We were in 307 and our son in 308 (noisy).

InnatPlayadelRey, Manager at Inn at Playa Del Rey, responded to this reviewResponded 2 February 2012

We appreciate that this guest took the time to review their stay at the Inn at Playa del Rey. It is encouraging to hear that their interactions with our staff were friendly and that the staff is helpful. We are also grateful to hear that they noticed the quality of our bedding and our breakfast. It is our objective to provide each guest with a comfortable stay and a positive experience.

During breakfast and for wine and cheese, we offer both our breakfast room and our living room for our guests to enjoy. If our breakfast room seems full, guests can choose to have breakfast in our adjoining living room where there are two more sets of tables with chairs, living room/breakfast room deck, or even in their room or out on their balcony (we are happy to put together a tray). The same seating situation holds true for evening wine and cheese. While we may have only two sofas, one love seat and 7 chairs in the living room, this space opens to both a long exterior deck, the entire breakfast room, and a courtyard patio with many more tables and chairs.

The dog this guest mentioned was a service dog, as the Inn does not allow pets.

We were indeed informed of the toilet being backed up, and while we rarely have toilet problems, we had a plumber come out the same day we were notified. He said it was an issue of too much toilet paper. He came again the next day to fix the same problem a second time. We do have a sign in each bathroom advising guests that our building department requires a low flush toilet in every unit and that we recommend using a small amount of toilet paper with each flush. This recommendation was not followed, but we did fix the toilet (twice) without delay, question, or comment.

It is my pleasure and my job to take care of most any issue for our guests during their stay at the Inn. Problems mentioned in this review such as a lack of glasses in the room, or a loud air conditioner may be remedied quite simply, but the staff needs to be informed so we can help. Managing a hotel of any size has its share of joys and challenges. In the over ten years that I have worked at the Inn at Playa del Rey, I have experienced a variety of joys but my greatest challenge is always the same: The guest who has an issue with our hotel and does not express to us, the staff, the problem or problems while they are here at the Inn.

I suspect in this case that the reviewer had an issue with the price of his room once he learned that we had a one night special in effect during his three night stay. I think this price discrepancy adversely affected his experience at the Inn. We have credited his credit card the difference in the rates. We strive for only very positive guest experiences at the Inn at Playa del Rey and remain grateful for any suggestions that would make us better.

Sincerely,
Liz Hall, Manager

The Inn surpassed our expectations.
We arrived in LA after a long haul overnight flight from Australia and were met at Reception by welcoming and friendly staff who offered to move our luggage to store for the day. We had a lot of heavy ski gear and suitcases so this was much appreciated.

After a day sightseeing, we returned to the Inn to be warmly greeted and taken to our spectacular suite (we had been upgraded) where all our luggage was waiting for us.

We were shown where the guest computer was available for us to complete our seat allocation for our flights the next morning, with a printer as well so this process was undertaken with no fuss.

Then we joined other guests in the lounge room for complimentary drinks and cheese, dips, biscuits and crudites. This was a lovely relaxing end to our day in LA. We went up to our lovely suite and washed and sank into the comfortable king bed, sleeping all night, waking refreshed for our early morning flight to the mountains. The taxi had been booked by Reception at the Inn and was there waiting for us at 7am to go to the airport.

What a wonderful and impressive introduction to the US. My first trip and our 24 hours in LA was the best beginning to our 4 week holiday in the US thanks to the Inn at Playa Del Ray.

We will definitely be back for a night next time we fly into LA.

We have stayed at the Inn at Playa Del Ray for many years and have never been disappointed. The staff are warm and welcoming, the rooms and beds are very comfortable, and we love the main floor area breakfast room that provides a wonderful selection of hot and cold dishes. In later afternoon wine and tasty "munchies" are set out - guests can use this room at any time of the day to linger, read, or visit. There is a central court yard where you can enjoy pleasant weather or bikes for touring the area. We use the Inn at Playa Del Ray as a jumping off point for cruises or long haul trips out of Los Angelos as we like to get away from the airport hotel area. The Inn does not have a shuttle so you need to take a cab or alternately use one of the shuttle services that you can book on line that can take you from the airport to the inn or from the Inn to the Cruise port. There is secure parking on site at no charge. The rooms and suites are all lovely and adjoins a marshland nature reserve where one can watch various wild life. Our recent visit occurred just before Christmas, and as usual the Inn was beautifully decorated, and provided a soothing retreat and a quiet restful haven

Room Tip: If you wish to have a view of the nature preserve area you may wish to request a suite facing that direction. Also, if you wish to request a room that does not face the road in front of the inn if you prefer to have more of a view or a slightly quieter location. The staff are very helpful and accommodating.

What a wonderful place to stay. The Inn has a definite New England feel to it, the rooms are beautifully decorated and we really enjoyed our view over the wetlands. It seemed worth the extra money for the Marina View room as the rooms facing Culver Blvd. may be noisy. Our room had a fireplace, balcony and nicely sized bathtub. We enjoyed the evening wine and appetizers in their well appointed living room in front of a blazing fire as well as the home cooked breakfast. All in all a wonderfully relaxing experience which we will definitely repeat. Playa del Rey is a gem of a beach town with lots of interesting bars and restaurants - don't miss a hamburger at the Shack!

Room Tip: Pay extra for the rooms overlooking the wetlands.
