If you like rustic farmsteads with the added bonus of being within walking distance of the ocean, you will love Glendeven. It was not the best B&B we have stayed in but it had some great detail which added to our enjoyment.
Our room was the Briar Rose which is huge, vaulted ceiling, clean(!), antique furniture and a sitting area in front of the wood burning fireplace (which they prepare for you each day so all you have to do is strike a match). The best part of the room is the balcony with a view of the ocean. We enjoyed feeding the chickens, walking with the llamas, touring the grounds and gardens. The daily breakfast baskets were delivered right to your door each morning and the contents were tasty and plentiful using their own eggs and organic produce. We really enjoyed the fresh flowers in our room which we assume came from the gardens. We loved the walking trails that were close by and kayaking while exploring the sea caves. The inn also hosts a wine tasting bar(n) which features Mendocino county wineries. We also enjoyed the art / pottery / glass work / wood-work galleries in Mendocino and surrounding towns. As you can see, there is plenty to do if you want to stay for a longer period of time.
There are plenty of restaurants and all are pricey for what you get but this is a tourist area so it is expected. I do regret we were not at the inn when they offered dinner (at $65 per person) – given the breakfasts were wonderful, we can only assume the dinners would be also. They will prepare lunch baskets if you are going to be out and about (for a cost).
Since we rely so heavily on reviews when traveling to unknown areas, I will also include the not-so-great points. We hope it does not dissuade you from giving the inn a try but will help you in picking the right room. You are paying a higher-than-average per night price (almost $300 per night for a queen size room) and knowing these things might keep your disappointment to a minimum. The Brair Rose has a tiny bathroom with a tiny shower and a tiny vanity. If large, luxurious bathrooms are important to your B&B experience, pick another room. It has a queen size bed when a king would be nicer. It is a former farmstead with a rustic feel and sometimes we observed worn, threadbare or messy areas (some would call it “quaint”) but it didn’t detract from our personal enjoyment. There is no television or cell phone coverage but there is Wi-Fi available and it worked flawlessly. There is no full size ironing board and I cringed when I had to put the portable board on top of an antique to iron our clothes. Also, check the restaurant reviews on the internet before visiting. Two of the recommendations were less than satisfactory and the internet would have warned us.
With all that being said, the pros far outweigh the cons and we would definitely choose to return to Glendeven.
