As soon as you walk into Harmony Guesthouse (the one on West Main st), it feels like you've walked into the home of a Chinese artistocrat from centuries ago. It is a lovely, lovely place but it might not be the place for you if you're looking more for a dorm setting.
There are 2 dorms available, a 4 and 6 bed, but both are extremely small and cramped. I stayed there a night and it was amazing hanging out in the courtyard but being in the room certainly wasn't super comfortable. All in all, if you're looking to stay in dorms, Harmony isn't for you, there are better options. But if your budget isn't too tight the other rooms are really quite nice.

Harmony Hotel is the newer, quieter, prettier sibling of Pingyao's well established Harmony Guesthouse, close to the centre of the walled city and to one of the west gates. It's photogenic and very well designed. Rooms have big comfy beds, good showers, lovely decorations and furniture, and sensible arrangements. Rooms are built around stunning two-story courtyards, each with benches and tables. The reception/bar/restaurant is just as pretty and is staffed by the interested and helpful owners, who have excellent English. Decent Chinese and western food is available. So is a good selection of alcoholic and soft drinks. Although priced like a hostel and very friendly, it is a hotel aimed at couples, young families and older travellers. It all feels very new at present, and when everything beds in and the staff relax into their roles, it will be excellent.

A bit tricky to find but central. The staff speak good English. The room is ok for what you pay the bathroom doesn't have a tub. It has a traditional decoration and architecture. You can also have day trips to places away from Pingyao, we didn't used this service but we think they have reasonable prices. They have a bar/restaurant where you can have western or Chinese breakfast, traditional food and drinks.
The place is quite so you can rest after a noisy day in Pingyao!
The wifi is good.
In my opinion (not my boyfriend option ) the room has a strange smell, but I'm a bit picky.

You can reach the hotel with a 15 minute walk from the bus station. The place is within the old city walls and therefore perfectly quiet at night. All the rooms are inside what looks an old family house courtyard with lots of bricks and lanterns. It feels like living in the old times and I probably enjoyed more the hotel decoration and atmosphere than some of the outside buildings Pingyao offers the tourist to visit...
You can eat at their restaurant or bring the food to your room. Staff is helpful and rooms have all you need.

My friend and I stayed at the Harmony Hotel for one night. The compound dates back to old times and has been beautifully preserved, Location wise, it is within the ancient city walls and is walking distance to everywhere. Though the rooms were small, there were well-maintained and are certainly a different experience from typical hotels. The toilets are clean and the service is good. Breakfast was not included for us but was of a reasonable price. We had dinner here too and the food was cheap and good. They also really try their best to accommodate your requests. We had an overnight train and they were nice enough to allow us to use a spare room to rest and freshen ourselves up before leaving. For the price we paid, it is definitely value for money. A bonus point is that we never once felt that they were trying to extract more money out of us. Highly recommended.
