We stayed two nights in #16. It was a terrific value, very clean, well-appointed little two-bedroom cottage with a big flat-screen TV, big bathroom, reasonable "continental" breakfast given the overall cost, nice pool and grounds, s'mores by the campfire a nice touch. On the slightly negative side, it took us a night to get used to the road noise, as it's on a road with 50 mph traffic zipping quite near the accommodations. And the cottages are "interior" in the sense that they do not relate much to the Russian River surroundings.

Room Tip: Some cottages might be a bit further removed from the road. Ask the people who take the reservation...

Recently my husband and I decided we needed a little mini vacation away from the daily stresses of home (the kids, to be exact) and decided to look around on Trip Advisor. Wanting to stay close-by, but try something new, we felt The Cottages were a good option. I called them, booked immediately, and showed up, ready to relax. Upon checking in, we were told we were the 20th reservation and we would recieve a free night. After swimming in the pool (heated) all day, sitting by a fire with a lovely group of fellow travelers (yes, the smores are fabulous) and retiring to a room I would love to recreate at home,it really hit me how lucky we were to get a free night on the house. Everyone who works at The Cottages are kind, warm and helpful, exluding "Frank The Cat," who is a taker, not a giver. We just booked our next stay here, and we are counting the days!

We were so pleasantly surprised by our visit to Cottages on River Road that we just couldn't stop talking about how much we loved it here! The staff is wonderful and the cottages are adorable. The property is so well kept and there is a beautiful walk through garden behind the cottages. The pool was lovely and the s'mores basket by the campfire was a wonderful way to end the day. Thanks for a wonderful visit!

I dont usually write reviews but after spending 4 days at The Cottages with my best friend I had to add my experience. This place is AWSOME!! The cottages are clean and sooo cute, the fire at night with the s'mores was a nice way to meet other guests without being uncomfortable. What makes this place different is the staff and the customer service. Our hostess Deeanne made our visit the best. Everytime we got back from our daily activities we felt like we were coming back to a good friend. I'm already planning my next trip with my husband.

My husband, his parents and I shared a garden view 2 bedroom cottages and all agreed that this was a wonderful, wonderful place to stay. The cottage was not huge, but plenty spacious. We were comfortably spread out over two good sized bedrooms, each with a dresser and comfortable bed (Loved the heavy duvets! Made for a cozy sleep on a chilly night!). A decent size living room with a sofa and two comfortable chairs allowed plenty of space for evening and morning socializing and an adjacent kitchenette (with fridge, sink and coffee maker) was perfect for storing the cheese and wine we had collected during our day spent in Napa Valley. Upon arrival we were a little skeptical ... the cottages are right on the fairly busy River Road and don't look like much from the outside. But as soon as you enter the office you know that you are in a special space. It has a bright and airy feel and looks out on a beautifully landscaped courtyard. All cottages are accessed from this courtyard. The courtyard feels like such a retreat with the already mentioned landscaping, a stone fire pit and a good sized pool. The cottages themselves are very thoughtfully decorated ... nothing super fancy but definitely not your standard hotel room fare. You can immediately tell that someone put a lot of thought into creating an airy, comfortable, unique retreat. We were thrilled walking into our cottage! In the evening we joined other guests at the fire pit for S'mores and in the morning enjoyed a generous continental breakfast (bagels, donuts, fruit, yogurt, coffee, juice) in our cottage living room. How clever of the management to provide trays and to invite you to enjoy breakfast in the comfort of your vacation home.
The location of the cottages is also perfect. You are not in the middle of town but are still within walking distance to river access at the Stumptown Brewery (whose deck, by the way, was a fun and colorful place for dinner and whose food, although bar food, was fantastic!). You are also only a 20 minute drive from the ocean at Jenner (Check out the seals! Eat at "The River's End"! Rent a kayak to paddle out to the seals!) and within a short drive of several wineries. Our trip took us wine tasting through Napa Valley (do it South to North which will make for a shorter drive to Guernville) and then from Calistoga to Guerneville (a 45min drive). We enjoyed what Napa had to offer but loved returning to a less touristy more grounded/nature-ey place for the night. We then continued up River Road to Jenner and headed north to Fort Ross (Another must see! Both for history and nature buffs. You can actually access the water from the Fort and have beautiful views up and down the coast.). Heading back south from Fort Ross we stopped for a late lunch at the River's End in Jenner. This restaurant sits on top of the cliffs overlooking the Russian River delta. It's a bit pricey but both the food and especially the view are worth the extra few dollars. You can have an excellent lunch entree for $16 although many of the choices are more expensive. Sitting high above the beach sipping Sonoma wines and dining on seared Tuna while overlooking seals, pelicans, turkey vultures and the rocky North California shoreline we did not regret the little bit of extra money spent. We are already planning a return to the Russian River area and are looking forward to a longer stay at the Cottages on River Road.
