When we arrived at The Dell, they did not have a room for us, even though we had a voucher confirming a voucher a twin beeded room with full ocean view booked for us by our operator. Following discussions with the duty manager who must have been at least 17 years old, we were given a room with two beds with no view of the ocean with a promise of a change the following day. The desk clerk told us to look for the building with the green awning and take the lift to the 7 floor where our room would be in fact the awning was red and our room was on the ground floor. The following morning the changed front desk staff knew nothing or our intended change and our voucher had been lost. Following further discussions we were allocated a twin beeded room with full ocean room which was o k but never worth the cost. Meanwhile as we had been out for the day and had checked our luggage with the bell boy, the bell boy had mislaid it, finally I had to go to the bell station and identfy it myself which was a bit worrying as I could have walked off with anyone elses luggage. That evening we arrived at the Shearwater restaurent for evening meal where we had booked a table at breakfast but no table had been reserved for us. Following discussions with the manager a table was found for us. From then on we had problems with our account which could be viewed on the t v screen, initially we were charged $426 for telephone calls we never made, we were charged an extra $400 a night for the room even though our operator had paid for the room, a further $38 a night for breakfast which our operator had also paid for, and also for a meal which we had not had. Following many many heated discussions with the front desk they finally adjusted the account. When checking out the desk clerk confirmed our account was clear.

Three days after we had arrived back in the UK I discovered the hotel had taken $336 from my bank account unauthroised by myself. I have e mailed the hotel 3 times about this but they do have the courtesy to respond. My operator however has managed to obtain a statement and apprently this $336 is for telphoen calls that we never made, in fact some of these calls were made when we in the plan back to the UK however, to date The Dell is refusing to refund the money. The other calsl were made at times when I know we were out of our room.

The Hotel itself is lovely, the Ocean Towers room are o k but that is about all, the location is lovely the food is fine, the bar is overtaken by local dance groups and local people so much so that they imtimidate you to let them have your table. The oraganisation of the hotel is the worst I have ever experienced, so unless you want a break with hassel all the way from the time of arriving to the time of leaving DO NOT STAY AT THE DELL.

First, keep in mind that this trip was a business trip, mostly paid for by the company. My husband and I stayed two nights at the Del in late April for a corporate event. Like most other people, I'd only previously seen this hotel as a tourist tromping through the grounds and into the lobby. I never thought I'd actually get to stay at the Del one day. So, needless to say, my hopes were high. Check in went smoothly and our room was better than expected -- a mini suite in the main building. The room overlooked the hotel entrance and we could enjoy the view of the Coronado Bridge and marina while laying on the bed. The rest of the room was large, with what looked like what should have been a makeup/dressing room (now outfitted with a lonely frige), a walk-in closet and a sparsely accessorized Art Deco type bathroom. All in all, the room and service we received were good. The banquet dinner we enjoyed was excellent and we highly recommend the Sunday brunch, just be sure you go hungry at $55 per person. The location and proximity to the beautiful beach, shops and outdoor activities is second to none. Just keep in mind that Saturdays and Sundays in particular tend to be overrun with tourists that come in on buses. The hotel was nice, but I didn't feel that the service or ambiance was worth whatever that room must have cost the company. You pay for location and presitige at the Del. We likely won't stay there again unless the company is paying, but there are many very nice accommodations within a few blocks of the Del that might be worth looking into.

We stayed 4 nights at the Del in April. We were expecting a much better experience. We had booked a suite; when we checked in, the suite smelled foul and the bedroom portion had no windows -- $650 a night! The hotel was able to move us into a nicer suite, but only for a night. Because they had no other suites available, we then moved into a room in the Ocean Tower (new building) as long as it had 2 beds (our kids were along). We couldn't move in immediately, so checked our luggage. We returned late at night only to find that our new room only had one bed. We moved again into an adequate room, our 4th room in 2 nights!

The hotel did treat us to breakfast when I complained to the General Manager's office, but we generally felt that the Del offered poor value. Most of the staff was exceptionally nice, but it was uneven -- the pool area staff were particularly bad. The pool itself was beyond crowded, the rooms were not impressive, and the food was wildly overpriced. This is a hotel that is living off its reputation, an average experience at top flight prices.

Howard Johnson was just a very basic comfortable hotel room. Situated close to Seaworld and many stores in area.

From the moment we stepped off the plane, I should have known we were headed for trouble...the 'so-called' shuttle service was missing in action - we waited over an hour after calling the hotel for pick-up. Not only was the shuttle driver late, he was quietly rude, grumpy and a speed freak. Once we got into our room, we realized the trouble didnt stop once our ride was over. The curtains were hung with safety pins and clothes pins, there were huge stains on the carpet, there was no alarm clock (we had to purchase one), the bathroom with filthy and the sinks were clogged. We contacted management about the problems, and by the next day the plumbing was fixed, but that was it. We would have left immediately after check-in, but we were in San Diego for our sons graduation from USMC and our time was very limited...every day we were at the Marine Base and late evening only were we at the hotel...needless to say, we didnt have the time or resourses to go elsewhere. After we came home, we notified HJ's headquarters and all we got was a paltry 'apology' and a coupon for a free night stay ( Like we'd ever repeat THAT performance again!!). When we got our credit card statement, we also realized we were OVER-billed. We got the room online at $59.00 per night (military family rate), but were charged $98.00 per night. After many phone calls, the management at HJ's in San Diego claimed that since we didnt get that rate directly from their hotel ( I purchased the room on their website), they couldnt re-imburse us. I wouldnt reccommend this hotel from hell for anybody....not only does it feed on the long distance families of military recruits (advertising cheap rates for them), it's a scum bag hotel with a fancy name. DO NOT ENTER.
