We stayed here for 3 nights in mid December. Hit town without any reservations and discovered that this is a good time to catch great deals as the weather was great and the village was empty. We went to the Carmel welcome center and had our pick of discounted rooms. Based on the Tripadvisor #1 rating for Lamp Lighter, we opted to stay here and had our choice of several rooms at $110/n.
The Sea Star room was the largest available with a fireplace and two walls of sunny windows so my wife selected it, much to our later regret. I will discuss this later.
When you read other reviews you will note that the location, cleanliness, ambiance, upkeep, parking, landscaping, room service, staffing, WiFi speed, shower water pressure, value pricing, friendliness, room decor etc. are generally way above the average and I totally agree with most that has been written.
However, there are some negatives that seem to be omitted.
1] It was like a pet motel with most guests tethered to there little yippy dogs that are constantly barking at each other. I left with three itchy flea bites on my legs.
2] No coffee until 8am, when they bring out the free b'fast of boiled eggs, yogurt, cereal, oatmeal and Costco muffins. Walk to town up the steep incline about 6 blocks and buy coffee at 6am if you are a early riser.
3] It is located on Ocean Drive [ Main St.] but actually 1/2 way btw the beach and town on the steep incline that slopes from town to the ocean. We are in good shape so no problem but those with physical problems will be challenged walking in either direction.
4] The 5pm wine/cheese is basically catered by Costco... peanuts, cheese platter, crackers and bottom shelf wine. Free but minimalist.
Now this brings me to room selection. I totally agree with what another reviewer [ see 11/10 ] wrote about the Sea Star Room--it was a noisy fish bowl. All five sides had issues--the front door/windows were 20 feet from the fire pit, a gathering place were everybody begins with the free wine at 5pm and continue until the late hours. The left side has windows that are near the 8am breakfast room so the noise begins at 7am with preparation and guest start looking into the room at 8am. On the right side of room you have guests with their yippy dog.Behind the bedboard wall is the staff service area and throughout the day they will come and go making noise. Above you are 2 guest rooms that seem to magnify the footsteps of guests. Basically, we shut the blinds so that others would not look in and waited till the fire pit conversation quieted around 11pm to sleep. Yes, the management cuts off the fire at 8-9pm but they go home so there was is no night time monitoring of the party noise outside the room. Thankfully the cold and dark eventually drove them to their rooms.
I would gladly stay here again if at a discounted price but never the Sea Star room as it is only for deaf exhibitionists.
