Sometimes crowded because it's a famous beach, but its beautiful, bathrooms are clean, views are spectacular.

This beach about 5 minutes past town, may actually be prettier than the town beach. You should definitely stop here along HWY 1 for some pictures, and if inclined you could stay awhile too. The sand is a bit coarser than the city beach and the last time I came the seaweed had attracted some flies, still the beach and colors of the water and cliffs are certainly dramatic. The waves here can be a little choppy and are not really ideal for swimming. I believe there are restroom facilities at one end.

Carmel river beach is really three beaches. There's the north part off of Scenic Road in the main part of town and there's the southern beach accessible directly from the highway. There's also a middle section of the beach that has rocky promontories on each side dividing it from the other two areas. It's very scenic, it has tide-pools and there were only four people on it when we visited on a warm Sunday afternoon in May. To get to this beach you drive south from town, go over the Carmel River Bridge and turn right on Ribera Road. Follow Ribera road through the Carmel Meadows housing area until it dead-ends. There are stairs here that go down about 100 steps to the beach (it is a bit of a climb back up). I believe you can also access this section via a path from the southern section.

When we were there there was a wind and surf advisory. Totally spectacular. Don't miss the sunsets!

It is a beautiful Cali beach. Can get chilly so bring a sweatshirt even in summer sometimes. Great place to people and dog watch
