Had short ribs, flank steak, a couple other entres. IPA-intense beer selection which did not suit.

Meal was just above room temp. Short ribs tasted ok, barely enough demiglas. Mashed potatoes were undercooked with whole barely cooked garlic cloves. Glad I caught them! Horse radish cream sauce had no taste. Not worth $24 whatsoever.

Skirt steak was tough.

Menu is a couple of years old and needs a refresh; alternatively, the wait staff needs to beat on the kitchen crew to raise their bar. Service is always a bit above average. Not entirely attentive though.

We were looking for a place to eat while on vacation staying in Oceanside. We drive down to Carlsbad and walked around a bit looking at all the different restaurants as our grandson is a picky eater. We decided on The Compass and it was a great decision. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. They have a dining area and bar area also. We sat on the patio outside and watching the people come in and out you could tell this was a place the locals loved. The food was amazing. Our grandson had their hot skillet mac and cheese which he ate it all. I had the braised beef ribs on garlic mashed potatoes which I also ate it all as it was so tender and the mashed potatoes were definitely homemade. My husband had their hamburger and again no leftovers there either. Our waitress was amazing and we never felt ignored. This would be a stop we'd make again when in the area.

Found this by accident when visiting Carlsbad as we went into Carlsbad Village, so we stopped for appetizers and drinks. We really enjoyed the clams appetizer - the sauce was amazing and a little spicy! We needed a little more of the bread to get all the juice, and there was a charge, but only 1$ so not too bad. Husband tried a flight of beers, and enjoyed them. I tried one of the specialty cocktails, and it wasn't what I hoped for, but I would have been willing to try some of the others if we went back. The environment was casual and friendly, and the waitress was engaging and helpful. Looked like many more fun foods to try on the menu including burgers that the people next to us ordered that looked delicious!

Not a fast food place. Takes about 20 minutes for food once order has been received. Great menu. Generous proportions. Inside and smaller outside eating.

We were over from the UK and staying in Carlsbad to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We made three trips to The Compass and enjoyed every visit. We didn't have a full meal - just Corn Dogs once - but we did enjoy many cocktails, beers and wines. Some Happy Hour, some not, but always sitting at the bar savouring the atmosphere. We were well looked after by the bar staff and met some interesting fellow drinkers. You really should try a Pickleback!
