“A world wonder!”
Reviewed 25 April 2012

A 2-3 hour strenuous trek is rewarded by the spectacular Tigers Nest Monastery seemingly clinging to the side of a sheer cliff. Surprisingly it is more tanten levels that includes the 8th century spiritual Buddhist alter with reincarnate rimpoches in silent meditation. A sight to behold...go now before it's "discovered".

“Do it. Just take your time...”
Reviewed 20 April 2012

After reading all the reviews about how difficult the climb would be, I wasn't sure at all before our Bhutan trip if I could make it to the Monastery, being a 60+ lady with arthritis in the knee. But 3 out of 4 of our group did. I took the pony to the cafeteria (USD6) for the experience (which I enjoyed tremendously) then decided to walk the rest of the way up. One of our group took the pony to the second viewing point (USD10) which is the start of the 750 steps (down into a valley, then up) to the Tiger's Nest. The key is to take your time - stop whenever you feel out of breath. The thin air up there (2500m to 2800m) will make sure you do that often enough, unless you are used to this kind of altitude. You would want to stop every so often anyway to admire the views.
The Monastery itself is a wonder: the monks chant their puja and blow their long horns - amazing energy! Novices busy themselves with their various duties in the cavernous halls. A train of four ponies had just trotted up ahead of us with supplies.
My walking pole was useful for the descent, and shoes with a fairly good grip helped. If you live in the tropics, a fleece is definitely needed in the early morning. Starting at about 9am, with a tea break at the cafeteria before the climb, and leisurely lunch at the cafeteria again on the way down, we were back at our van by 3pm.
If I have the chance to do it again, I would.

“trekking up to Tiger's Nest”
Reviewed 19 April 2012

My husband is low vision so getting to the Cafeteria was an achievement of sorts! He's probably the first low vision person to do this trek. We had 2 great guides with us, thanks Mr Bhim and Mr Ganesh. We will remember this for a long time to come

“Worth the walk”
Reviewed 19 April 2012

Breathtaking walk....breathtaking views....once there...sense of satisfaction, but ultimately a little underwhelmed by the monastery itself.....got to do it though.
Don't waste time r money on a pony....too slow, and you won't get the satisfaction!
