“Quirky”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 September 2012

We stuck gold here and stayed in what was apparently the best cottage. It was huge with a king-size bed, wonderful bathroom and a huge lounge. We were part of a group and I gather some people had rooms half the size, but they still thought they were good. Yes the fittings were a bit shabby, but we expected that in Bhutan.

The dining room was more like a canteen - forget a romantic meal for two. The food as everywhere else in Bhutan was pretty terrible, but at the better end of the terrible spectrum.

The bar was quite seedy, but local spirits were cheap and with the right people a good atmosphere was whipped up.

Room Tip: I think you do better asking for a double room than a twin

We stayed at Hotel Olathang in Paro during our honeymoon in Bhutan, it's was a great choice! The location is great, and the private cottages spotting the lush landscape are amazing, we even had a balcony facing the woods and the river where we'd have our morning n evening tea. The wooden structure and the clean carpeted interiors of the rooms give a warm feeling in that cold place.

The staff were good, and they even have a wifi facility that we paid for during our stay (300 rupees).

The food, however was a bit of a let-down, the thukpa or Ema dashi weren't as great as the ones we had tasted in Thimphu. But the room service was prompt and neat.

Overall, a great place to go as a couple or family n friends.

Room Tip: Go for the cottages rather than the rooms.

Olathang is way out of the way from everything. The cottages are all in the forest and very private, cute on the outside, but the inside had a mildew smell. I was there in July and it was raining, so being it wasn't easy to get to the main building. the electricity went out at night and it was scary since I was alone and the phone was also not working. When I checked out the next day, the credit card machine was not working. The spa has a very friendly staff and offers a nice variety of therapies.
