“Great Place”
Reviewed 11 April 2012

The hotel is beautiful and the massages are great. The food at the restaurant could be improved but the breakfast was great. Also, make sure you visit the national park, they have a gorgeous waterfall, perfect for swimming.

My husband, two sons and I recently enjoyed a great couple of days at the Hacienda Guachipelin. The staff could not be more helpful. The food was great - buffet for every meal. You can sign up for an entire day of fun at the hotel. For $85 you will zip line for 1 1/2 hours, horseback ride for 1 1/2 hours, enjoy tubing for an hour, eat a buffet lunch, paint yourself with mud and then relax in a pool of volcanic water, finally swim at the base of a waterfall. Dogs and donkeys roam the grounds and are very friendly. I must stress the best part is the staff. The managers of the hotel and restaurant were very visible and eager to help. When they saw my picky eaters they wanted to know what they could bring for them. On our last day we had a tour of the snake garden. Johnny was our guide. He not only knew his snakes, he told us many interesting facts about Costa Rica. His English was impeccable. These are the nicest people we have met while on any vacation.

Room Tip: Don't take a room near the stables.

Our stay at Hacienda Guachipelin was disappointing. We had booked ourselves onto the three night trip advertised on their website which was advertised as running from lunchtime to lunchtime and included activities every morning and afternoon. When we arrived (in time for lunch as advertised in the package) we were told that we were there too early to check in and the man behind reception seemed confused about the package and was not at all helpful at explaining when we would be able to get into our room, what tours we were booked on to or what we could go and do in the meantime. When we did get in to our room it was ok but for the money in comparison to other rooms we had stayed in in Costa Rica it did not seem very good value.

Our first activity was supposed to be at the hot springs. We went to Reception to enquire and were told he could order us some transport and advised that staying for 3 hours would be a good lenght of time - the transport took a while to come and then when we were a short way there he stopped and we were told we had to wait for some others to come who were also wanting to go to the hot springs - after waiting for about 15 minutes they still hadn't arrived and so we continued on without them, having wasted 15 minutes of our day. When we got there we were given a towel each and told that the hot springs were a 5 minute walk down a muddy path into the forest. When we eventually arrived we were in the middle of a building site! Not one person had mentioned to us that there was building work going on until we got there and by that point we were stuck there with no way of getting back to the hotel for 3 hours (not the guy on reception, the taxi driver or the man that handed us the towels at the entrance to the hot springs had mentioned the building work!). In the photos on the website the hot springs look idyllic and we were presented with 3 hours in the middle of a building site. Luckily I must have looked so unimpressed that one of the builders said that there was one final small pool and led us off through the forest to one in a secluded spot which was a slightly better prospect but still not anything like advertised.

Then on the way back to the hotel we didn't want to miss our transport so got out of the pool 15 minutes early to ensure we got back to the road in good time. It turned out the reason they had been so keen for us to stay for 3 hours was that they had other people also booked on a 5 o'clock taxi who didn't have a watch and didn't make it back to the taxi until around half past five so we were again hanging around for other people for ages without any sort of apology from the staff!

After the first day's experience the tours definitely got better with horse riding to the national park at Rincon de la Vieja and a good guided walk where we had a guide to ourselves who spotted white faced monkeys, toucans and Monarch butterflies for us and a great afternoon's tubing where we were again the only two people tubing and had an instructor each.

The food was better than expected with a buffet and cook to order tortillas but after a couple of days got quite monotonous. A couple of night's we walked up to the Mirador which had great views of the volcano and out to the Pacific in the other direction and got a fantastic sunset but we were spooked after spotting a snakeskin right next to the hut on our second trip up there and made a hasty retreat back to the ranch.

All-in-all we wouldn't recommend Hacienda Guachipelin as a place to stay but the tours run by the company that the hotel is affiliated with were great. You can do the tours without staying in the hotel though so if we were to go again that is definitely what we would do.

Reviewed 1 April 2012

We stayed here for 2 nights in December 2011.

We had booked the 2 nights 3 days package on the website. Unfortunately when we arrived no-one seemed to have heard of the package and seemed really confused by it. We were told that we would have to go to a separate excursions company to make reservations for our trips although we had times for them on an itinerary. We were also told that a lot of the activities on the itinerary were to be done without a guide. It seemed very confusing and I think now it would just be better to book the hotel separately and then book the excursions and activities when we arrived. All of our meals were also included in the price but again none of the restaurant staff seemed to have heard of the package and we had to explain ourselves every time we went for a meal.

The hotel itself was great. Our room was nice, as was the pool area.

Buffet food was included in our stay. Avoid this at all costs. It was very tasteless and the rice seemed like it had been there a long time – it was very hard.

The next day we had booked tubing for the afternoon and had planned to go on a horseride and guided walk around the national park but decided that we would skip the morning activities and relax by the pool with a good book instead! The dogs at the hacienda are soo friendly and cute and just lounged around with us or brought us sticks/stoned to throw for them!

We had breakfast in the restaurant. I avoided the buffet style stuff and instead had a freshly prepared omelette – this was soo much better than anything we had eaten at the hacienda so far! Nice and fresh and really tasty!

After spending the morning at the pool we again had lunch at the hacienda and again buffet style. Still not the best food of the holiday but the chicken was quite tasty and the salad was fresh.

At our allotted time we headed over to the office for the outdoor adventures. We were a little early and no-one really seemed that interested in why we were there or paid us any attention. When we finally spoke with a member of staff we were just told to “wait over there”. When they finally did speak with us it was to see whether we wanted to pay extra to have a further member of staff come with us and take photographs. Both ourselves and a Canadian couple who were joining us for the tour turned down this option. We were met by our guide for the horse riding section of the tour and taken to the stables. We were each given our horses and set off for the ride to the river. If you’ve never ridden before and are nervous at all I would definitely recommend that you avoid the horseriding element of this tour and just do the tubing. The horses like to compete to be at the front and there is no instruction from the guide! However, if you’re up for a challenge or like riding then it really is fun! I really enjoyed the experience. It did involve crossing a few rivers/streams where the water was quite high (over my feet) and going both up and down rocky hills which can be a little scary!

We reached the river and dismounted and were met by the guides and tubes for the tubing section. We were given a brief demonstration of how to stay safe in the tube and what to do if you come out before heading down to the river. I had a waterproof camera with me and had the strap around my arm so I could take some photographs at the calmer sections. On the first rapid I lost my grip on the handles and was tipped out of my tube. I did find it a little scary and quite difficult to get back in but one of the guides did come to help me and a few bumps and bruises later I was back in the tube. The guide was quick to blame the fact that I had my camera and was saying that I was holding it rather than the strap – he didn’t seem to want to hear that it was just tied around my wrist and that it was actually the other hand that I had lost my grip with. Personally, I think it was quite frowned upon that we opted out of the photograph package that they offer. The rest of the tubing went without incident. We did speak with some of the guides and other than the initial problem with the camera they were really friendly and nice. Once of the guides even offered to take some photographs for me when we were on a calmer stretch! We returned to the hacienda by yellow school bus which was filled up with the tubes! Quite a novelty as we don’t really have yellow school buses in the UK!

We headed to the mirador (look out point) at sunset and I would definitely recommend this. It was stunning! We could see the clouds rolling over the hills with the moon to one side and the sun setting to the other. It was so peaceful and serene.

That evening we decided that we would opt out of the buffet and instead try the ‘fast food restaurant’. We ordered sandwiches and chips and I would definitely recommend this over the buffet option. It was the best meal we had the hacienda and I was very satisfied even if we did pay for it!!

The next morning we headed out to the Symbiosis spa expecting it to be quite busy! We arrived and were the only people there other than one male employee. It was very different to any spa I have ever been to. The man seemed to be more of a care taker than spa employee and didn’t really seem to know why we were there. We advised him that we had come for the package including the sauna, hot springs and volcanic mud and he proceeded to show us around and show us where the mud comes from. We then went into the sauna for a little while. It soon heated up and it was really nice to relax! After this we headed to the volcanic mud and were painted head to toe in the stuff which was a very strange feeling!! It was really warm and smelled a bit (obviously to be expected!). A tip here is to wear an old bikini or swimming costume that you don’t mind having ruined as it is quite difficult to get the mud out and you will get it on your clothing!! The mud was then rinsed off under really cold shower s – brrrrr! It did make my skin feel really good though! Next was the hot tubs – warm tubs really – kinda like sitting in tepid bath water and not at all what I was expecting! Definitely worth it for the volcanic mud treatment but not so sure about the rest! We weren’t asked to pay or present our vouchers which I found very strange.

If you’re planning on staying at the Hacienda my advice would be to go for it as it is a stunning place but I would avoid the packages on their website and just book any tours with the Adventure Tours office as they are two separate entities who don’t really seem to like to work together! And avoid the buffet food…..

Just spent 4 nights and can only rave about the Hotel, the location and the activities. First, the region forms part of Costa Rica's environmentally progressive reserve, just down the road from the Rincon de la Vieja park and volcano. There one can hike a circular path through the forest, to bubbling mud springs, to sulfuric vents. A longer hike takes you to the volcano itself. At the hotel there is an Adventure Center with horseback riding (very humane treatment of all the horses), a brilliant canopy trip where visitors launch along 7 cables over ravines and forest, rappel, climb and generally enjoy, tubing, hot springs, spas, hiking and more. Finally the rooms are all very comfortable, the food is fine (if not great) and the staff could not be nicer -- all of them are courteous, friendly, extremely helpful and a pleasure to interact with. This is a family-friendly, exciting, easy way to experience some absolute splendors of Costa Rican nature.
