Hacienda Guachipelin
Reviewed 19 January 2012

The rocky road to Rincon from Playa Grande was an adventure in itself. On arrival, we were greeted by friendly and competent staff. The room was a little small, but adequate and clean. The restaurant buffet was predictable, (OK but no cigar!) The staff could use better training in describing travel for the tours offered, but tried their best to help. The horseback trip to the waterfall was great, and the staff recommendation that we take the "shorter" tour was right on! Longer would have been painful for my 73 year old bones. The "luxury spa" wasn't working due to a loss of hot spring water caused by a local gas company, but we were not advised of that and were sent to a small cabin. When we protested, the staff made a special effort to help, and we ended up getting a good experience. Too bad they didn't explain before we booked the spa trip. But, all was well that ended well!

Dear BuggsScruggs, thank you for the time in writing this review, we are glad that in all you had a good time in Hacienda Guachipelin, regarding not so good explanations I just want to explain that the hotel makes a big effort in hiring a big percentage of local people in order to help the communities around, some of this people don´t speak very good english even though they try and do their best, that is why sometimes there is a gap in this matter. Sorry for the inconvenience of the SPA , sometimes it goes out of our control. I hope you can come back and visit us.

we stayed here for 3 nights towards the end of 2011. This was one of the most enjoyable vacation experiences we'd had. For our family, including our kids 11 & 13 this vacation was a lot of fun. The canopy with tarzan ropes, the tubing down the Rio Negro river, the horseback riding to La Cangreja waterfarll, the hot springs & mud bath, milking the cows...everything was fantastic. On our own we went to Rincon de la Vieja volcano national park and did the 3hr circuit which included another fantastic waterfall and the very educational tour about the volcanic activity and the pailas. On top of everything, the hotel is 60min away from El Coco Beach and 40 min from Liberia airport. I highly recommend this place to anyone who is seeking for a fun family adventure. -

We spent our 2012 new years at the Hacienda Guachipelin hotel. The place is at the top of mountain, isolated from the city, in the middle of nowhere. To reach at this hotel, we had to drive on dirt road for an hour. It was culture shock. However, this hotel was trying their best to welcome guests and to be westernized. The service was good and people were friendly. The food was excellent. There is no restaurant or shop near by. So, we ended up eating at the hotel every meal. Every meal was great. The hotel's got a lot of adventure activities such as canopy ride, water rafting, hiking, etc. There are several water falls nearby and many hiking trails. We enjoyed the hiking in the nature and hot spring to bath. The hot spring near the hotel was awsome. If you are adventrure type of person, this place is a great place to be.

Hello Kate : I am glad you enjoyed the hotel, we do our best to please our guests. Thank you for the good comments regarding the food, glad you liked it, it is very costarican food, specially the buffets, on the menu you can find wood oven pizzas too. And yes , the adventure activities we offer are very good, happy new year, and the staff of Hacienda Guachipelin would like to see you again soon.

I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this hotel. The rooms were very comfortable, the amenities that the hotel offer were amazing (great swimming holes with bright blue water and use of its natural hot spring) and its proximity to Rincon De La Vieja National park. The only things that I didn't like about this hotel is that if you don't have a car, you need to pay for the car shuttle to get to and from the National Park and the hot springs. Each time you want to use the shuttle it costs $5 each way. I wish the hotel offered free shuttle service or free bikes to rent to get to and from places. In addition, there are no other restaurants in the area and your only food option is there hotel restaurant, which the food is okay. Lastly, the hotel tries to make you sign up for their adventure tours and make you believe you need to sign up for all there services, but you don't need to. If you plan to do a hike in the national park you do not need to hire a guide, the trails are well marked. However, we did do their whitewater tubing adventure trip, which was a lot of fun and highly recommend doing that tour.

Greetings from Rincón de la Vieja and Hacienda Guachipelin : jlichtman, thank you very much for your time to write this review, the satff at the hotel feels very happy that you liked the hotel and the surroundings, hot springs and swimming holes as you say are of great joy, also the waterfalls are spectacular.
Regarding the shuttles, for us is kind of difficult to provide them to all guests for free, you saw the distances and the dirt roads are hard on cars, we need to mantain them, that is why we charge $5 as a symbolic rate to keep offering the service, and that helps us to offer the service at the time the guest needs it, and not with fix itineraries.
To offer bikes, GREAT idea, let us see what we can do about that, maybe next time you will finde them, I like the idea.
Happy New Year, hope to see you back soon

Return visit to wonderful hotel. Came with wife, 10 year old boy, 14 year old girl and 16 year old son. Wife and I stayed in Suite 2 which was one very large room with great private porch in back and hamock in front. Kids in 46 and 47, had a/c and tv also. We all loved zip lining, tubing (guide stayed with 10 year old the whole time at our request), mud and hot spring spa, and 2 hour horseback ride, all for $85 pp including lunch. We stayed 4 nites (you could do in 3) and they let us split up this day package over couple of days which really was terrific. We took hike with Oscar in Rincon de la Vieja National Park. We spotted many monkeys, wild turkey and other animals. Also visited their snake and butterfly farm which was fascinating. Food and lodging price excellent. Peole from Four Seasons travelled 90 minutes to do the sports activities here and "envied" our situation. Looking forward to going there again someday. Fly to Liberia and they pick you up for $100 for just over one hour drive. We then had them drive us to Playa Hermosa for 3 more nites at the beach. From there back to Liberia airport just 30 minutes. Great adventure and beach vacation. Don't bother to rent car at Costa Rica driver rates.

Room Tip: 40 and above is newer wing. Suite is one very large room and still inexpensive.
