“Shangri-La in Guanacaste”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 April 2012

We loved this hotel nestled beside Rincon de la Vieja -- beautifully manicured grounds, comfortable and quiet rooms, first-rate service and staff and a long list of fun things to do while you're there. Our family of five enjoyed the canopy tour, horseback riding to the waterfall, painting ourselves with volcanic mud and playing in the pool. We stayed in a villa which was very comfortable and ordered an extra bed for our little one. Like others have said, the road to the hotel is a killer but worth worth the drive -- we did it in a 2WD compact so likely not as comfortable as a 4WD. We would stay here again in a heartbeat!

Went with another family and had a great time. Food was amazing, the staff was very kind and helpful, and the kids loved the pools. Accommodations are really nice and the rooms with hammocks on patio are highly recommended! Our kids were too small to do any excursions but I've heard the waterfall/horseback ride tour is fantastic.

Just got back from a one-week trip to CR.Our three days at Borinquen were magical. Our family of for (2 adults, 2 kids ages 13 and 11) enjoyed everything about the landscaping, wildlife, views, mud baths, pool, dining, staff, activities, and accommodations. We got the villa rather than springing for the junior suite. For 3 nights and less price (we got the third night free via Orbitz), the room size was fine and perfectly comfortable. Our friends got the junior suite, which was amazing, but also more expensive and more of a hike up the mountain. All about tradeoffs and preferences. The view from up top is stunning. Even if you don't get one of the suites, definitely go for a morning walk up there and beyond the fence.
Our group did the 2 in 1 special, which included the horseback ride up to the waterfalls and zip line down. The day before, we did the zip line from Hacienda Guachipelen. Although we had fun on that one, Borinquen's zip line is higher, longer, and faster. Super fun!
The food at the restaurant is a bit inconsistent. On the first night I had the shrimp and rice, which was OK. The other nights we had the blue chicken, and a fish dish, which were much better!
Staff is VERY accommodating and friendly.
Had a few issues with our toilet (room 108) but other than that a flawless visit!
Would go back! Don't miss the white-face monkeys and petroglyphs on the path near the pool.

Room Tip: ask for a room with a good view but keep in mind that the rooms higher up will require more energy o...

Our recent stay at the Borinquen was wonderful. Guanacaste is absolutely beautiful. It's like living in a painting - the greens, blues, yellows are so vivid. We would certainly go back to Costa Rica since we only visited this one region; the country has much to offer adventurists & nature lovers.
During our week's stay we enjoyed the following activities at the resort: volanic mud (very fun family activity), natural volcanic steam sauna, canopy ziplining, horseback riding, beautiful pool. The service and food were excellent (we were on vacation, not in a hurry) and enjoyed chatting with the wait staff. Everyone was very friendly (you get what you give). Although we were at the top of the hill (with an amazing view, especially the millions of stars at night), we had no problem with the distances between the restaurant, reception, pool, sauna, etc. Golfcarts were always available when requested. We rented a 4x4 (which I would recommend) and did day trips to the many National Parks (Palo Verde, Tenorio, Rincon de la Vieja). The natural wildlife (including crocodiles, monkeys, sloths, birds...) was stunning. White water rafting on the Tenorio was breathtaking. Ofcourse we visited the beach too (Playa del Coco).
The sun rises early and sets early. It's completely dark by 7pm (in April at least) and not much to do. We often ended dinner around 8 & then just hung out on our suite porch looking at the stars. If you're looking to party (on the beach or elsewhere), this isn't the place for you.
Only draw back I would mention are the roads. Initially we thought the resort was too remote but eventually got used to getting to the main highway (~20kms) and Liberia (~47kms).

Room Tip: go for the jr. suite

Got a great deal through Orbitz and was able to spend 9 days here--every 3rd day being free. What can I say that hasn't already been said? Yes, it's a bit isolated and getting to the rooms is a steep walk unless you opt to get carted around but the grounds are beautifully kept, the views are fantastic, and they offer fun tours. The breakfast buffet was delicious too! However, what really made this trip unforgettable were the staff. They were extremely accommodating, charismatic, and went out of their way to make our stay special. I have to especially give a shout out to Noe who is part of the dining staff and owns Noah Travelling around Costa Rica. This is one awesome tico! Long story short, my father found his long lost Costa Rican son :). We booked a trip with him that ended with us seeing the sun set while sailing the Pacific. Good times!

I hesitated to give them an excellent rating because the pool could use more frequent skimming and the benches in the sauna are in need of repair--they were not comfortable to sit on. I'm nitpicking really because I will not hesitate to recommend Borinquen to my friends and family.
