“A Calistoga Gem”

My husband and I couldn't say enough positive things about this place! We have stayed there 2 summers in a row to celebrate our anniversary and both times we were upgraded. The place has a cool retro vibe, which we love. The rooms are clean, comfortable, and roomy. We have stayed on the second floor facing the courtyard and there isn't a view, but that hasn't bothered us. There is actually a wrap around balcony with chairs which is very nice to spend mornings on, and that has a great view of the main street, Lincoln Ave. (although it was under construction the summer of 2011). There are tables set up in various areas of the courtyard where I see people enjoying snacks, wine, and a good read. The staff is very friendly and helpful. I love the pools and especially the indoor hot tub. It is walking distance to all the main shops and restaurants, and close to our favorite winery, Schramsberg. We enjoyed a mud bath and massage, and both were excellent. For everything this place has to offer I think it's a steal! WE LOVE DR. WILKINSON'S!

Room Tip: We like staying on the second floor facing the courtyard because if you walk out to the community ba...

Thank you for your very kind review. I am glad that you enjoy Dr. Wilkinson's, our pools, staff and grounds. We are always doing something to upgrade the property ....in fact we are in the process of redoing some of our Pool Patio 2 rooms with two queen beds. We hope to see you again on your next anniversary and again, my thanks.

The rooms are very nice and CLEAN! The staff was very friendly. The three pools they have are amazing! We really enjoyed the pools and indoor hot tub. My husband and I both had great massages. Also, I had a pumpkin facial that I really enjoyed. I would definently reccommed Dr. Wilkinson's.

Our original Calistoga happy birthday get-a-way plan did not include Dr Wilkenson's. It was quite by chance and an obnoxiously loud construction project that had us checking out of another property and searching for an alternate spa experience. The chance was meeting Mark - the proprietor - at a local bar. He and several other  locals made us feel right at home while watching the Sharks and Stanford. They all sang me happy birthday too!!

After that fantastic birthday/bowl game/sharks win we awoke (at a different facility, mind you) to jack-hammers and chain saws and had to take a walk to save our ears and sanity.  Our sojourn took us to Dr W's as after a great evening we thought we would pay Mark a visit. We were greeted by Diane who let us know he would be in later and we started telling our story.  She (and later Mark) were truly sorry about our experience - these folks are first and foremost proud of their home town and hearing of our experience were hoping to help change our fortunes.

She quickly explained their offerings - which were very reasonable and booked us for the mud bath, massage and night's stay pending our ability to cancel at the other property. No deposit, just our word that we would let her know ASAP.  An hour later cancelation in hand (for that story, check out my other reviews) we returned and were introduced to the pools and changing rooms to use while our room was readied - all this and it was just 10am!!

At this point our expectations were seriously low - after jack-hammers anything would be more restful! Instead we met a Jacuzzi the size of a small swimming pool - Sign me up! The bath house is old school in the best sense of the term. It is not old (it is well maintained and clean!), it is not retro (upgrades are not cheesy 60's imitations but what would have been choosen had today's building technologies been available back then), it is like a true and fun time-warp!

The friendliness and warm welcome we met the night before in the bar was enfused into the rest of our day. Step one to relaxing is being in a place that is truly relaxed. And that is what Dr W's was best at creating for us - a warm embrace ( which i later found is the perfect description of a mud bath!)  and invitation to relax.. And I for one think that is the perfect get-a-way.

But know this is a bath house, not a frilly Burke spa day. This is communal (not public or private) space. It was just fine for our grandparents and we are happy to say for us too. But if you are uncomfortable being naked or seeing naked people in a shared space then you may not have the same experience. If you are open to something different in our rush rush modern world then give Dr W's a try.

In short, it's fun, staff are amazing, beds are very comfortable and prices quite reasonable. We will no doubt be back. And with a great group of friends.

Dear Carla,

Thank you so much for the kind words! We strive on a daily basis to create a relaxing and comfortable experience for our guests and I am thrilled that we were above and beyond your expectations!

Hopefully on your next visit you will have more time to enjoy the pools again, a facial and of course, another mud bath!

Best wishes,

We have been going to Wilkinson's for many years now. Over the years, we have tried a few others in Calistoga but return to Wilkinson's because it is so reliable -- and such a flashback to the 50's. we often stay in one of the duplexes with a kitchen, and, yes, we did get a great rate (as advertised here). The heated pool and huge spa alone make the stay worthwhile. Then there is the fact that you never need to move your car --- you can walk anywhere in Calistoga from doc Wilkinson's.

Room Tip: We love the rooms at the back with the kitchens.

We stayed at Dr. Wilkinson's because we were specifically looking for mineral pools and hot tubs (our first-choice property was under renovation so we had to find an alternative).

At first impression, it had the original 1950's charm. It went downhill from there. We were given "an upgraded" and "remodeled" room. It was large, but barely furnished. There was no armchair for reading, just three regular desk chairs. The armoir for TV was gigantic, yet when we opened it we found a tiny little set, not flat-screen, maybe 20 inches. It looked so ridiculous that we had a good giggle over it. The faucet in the shower barely worked. The room had a narrow and claustrophobic shower stall, not a tub (an unpleasant surprise - we're staying at a mineral bath place and we'd like to soak in our own private bathroom). The carpets were drab. There was dust on top of the headboard. Everything in the room looked dingy.

We specifically asked for a room away from the road, but no such luck - rattling cars and trucks kept us up at night (how about installing double-pane windows?). There were no amenities - no breakfast, no warm cookies in the evening, no cotton balls/q-tips/shower caps in the bathroom. The towels were thin, small, and scratchy. The pillows were springy and hard.

Now, both of us like vintage and we find a lot of charm in old-fashioned, historic hotels (stayed at many). If you're going for the 1950's original look and feel, but all means, please do! Yet Wikinson's was simply cheap. The decor in the room didn't fit stylistically and was cheap. Everything about the place looked and felt like a Motel 6 rather than a high-end Calistoga spa that they claim to be.

We paid an exorbitant price for this room (over $200 per night) and when we were checking out, I mentioned to the clerk how disappointed we were that nothing about the property was upscale like they claim. The clerk informed us that we had been given an upgraded room and overall their prices usually start at $250, so we got a good deal. Hmm...

Traveling a month later, we had to spend an night at an airport Holiday Inn. It was incredible, in terms of the amenities it offered and the low price we paid.

*THAT* was my beef with Wilkinson's - if I am paying over $200 a night, I am expecting to get value for my money. I would not have had a complaint if the room cost me $99, because that's all it's worth, taxes included.

Room Tip: Away from the road, in the back
