Trailside Inn
Ranked #19 of 27 Calistoga B&B and Inns
Reviewed 3 January 2012

We came to Calistoga to attend the lobster feed at a local winery October 7th and 8th of 2011. We basically chose to stay at Trailside because it was so affordable during the busiest season in Napa Valley. We found the Trailside Inn to be not only a real buy, but also charming and comfortable. We stayed in the Dutch Henry suite that has 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom. The bathroom is small, has space to store your toiletries, and it has a shower. The bedrooms are large and the beds are comfortable. It has a covered front porch with several chairs. It also has a full and fully equipped kitchen. The owner, Lani, is a wonderful hostess. Everyday she leaves fresh baked banana bread or muffins,a small pitcher of milk and juice, and a fruit plate for breakfast. She also left a welcoming bottle of wine. She has the kitchen stocked with small boxes of cereal, coffee, tea and condiments, as well as plates, silverware, etc. There is a small table in the kitchen. The main bedroom is off the kitchen with a 4 poster queen size brass bed, a comfortable reading chair and a gas fireplace that works. The room also has a lot of windows with blinds. There is a small flat screen TV and plenty of good cable channels to watch. Our relatives stayed in the Sam Brannan suite which was a one bedroom suite with a partial kitchen, a wood stove, and a large bathroom with a tub and shower. It shares a porch with the Fire Bell Lilly suite. The porch to these suites have an outdoor table and chairs with umbrellas. They also have a large swimming pool. They have a 2 acre property in the country just 2-3 miles outside of Calistoga. They are next to a dry bed creek and a vineyard. It was nice not to have to be up in a certain time frame for breakfast as you have to at the more expensive B&B's. If you want eggs and bacon for breakfast, you can buy it in town and cook it yourself. It was nice - and we plan to stay every time we return. It is also near some of the best wineries in Calistoga: V. Sattui, Castello de Amoroso, Zahtila and many others.

Room Tip: The Dutch Henry Suite is the largest and most versatile suite.

Trailside Inn is an interesting place. It is somewhat rustic for the opulence of the Napa Valley. Overall the accommodations were clean, yet dated. The innkeeper Lani was extremely warm and helpful. There are only three rooms total. It is a 4 miles out of town and if you have AT&T and need to make a phone call or text, you won't be happy. Also, they are on a geothermal well so you really don't get cold water. Once we got over those things we had a great time. There are nice grounds and a very nice pool. There is also a jacuzzi to relax in. The prices are reasonable for the larger sized rooms that include a small kitchen. Overall, we had a very nice time.

We came to Calistoga on a Saturday night in August for a wedding.

I was a little nervous about booking at the Trailside Inn because I couldn't find a single review anywhere on the internet. But we did it anyway because the Trailside was one of the few places we found in the area that had neither a two night minimum during peak season nor any terrible online reviews, plus we could get a two bedroom suite to share with a friend for less than the cost of a single regular room at the Clarion in town.

We stayed in the Dutch Henry Suite, which was a little worn, but clean and nicely decorated. There was a large living area with a full kitchen and a queen size bed that was comfortable but nothing special, and a second bedroom with a double bed where our friend stayed. The bathroom was small, but had a nice big shower. There was a through-the-wall AC unit in the main area, but none in the second bedroom. It gets cold at night in Calistoga, though, so we only ran it during the afternoon when we were getting ready for the wedding.

Unlike a lot of B&Bs, the suite had an entrance directly from the outside, so we did not need to go through the house to get to it when we returned late at night from the wedding. We also had very little contact with the owner, checking in with her when we arrived and saying goodbye when we left and nothing more. Also unlike other B&B's I've visited, there was no hot breakfast. The owner left a nice fruit plate and pitchers of milk and juice in the fridge, and a loaf of nut bread and some breakfast cereal and bananas on the kitchen counter so we could serve ourselves breakfast. While the hot, communal breakfasts at many B&Bs can be fun and tasty, this DIY continental breakfast suited our needs fine, since we could eat on our own schedule and not worry about coordinating with the owner or other guests.

The Trailside Inn also has a pool and hottub. The pool looked nice from a distance, but we didn't use it, and we never even looked for the hottub. The grounds are nice with lots of flowers and grape vines growing right by the rooms. It's right on Silverado Trail, so you can hear cars going by at night, but they didn't keep us up. And it's outside the main part of Calistoga, so there is nothing within walking distance, but it's only a 5 minute drive to town.

I wouldn't go out of my way to return, but for folks who need one night accommodation in the area at a reasonable price, the Trailside Inn is a perfectly acceptable option.
