“Cozy, relaxing stay”
Reviewed 5 June 2012

We are residents of nearby Sebastopol, and enjoy an occasional weekend at a Calistoga spa. We found Roman Spa to be a cozy, informal retreat with very nice facilities. The spa staff is great, and our treatments were on par with any of the spas in te area. The spa facility itself is small, but clean and tidy, and we heard that plans are in place to build a larger one to replace it. The mineral pools are set in a pleasant garden courtyard, small but clean. The rooms are comfortable, with the usual amenities; I found the bed a little too firm, but it works for a short stay. We left feeling quite relaxed and retored, and definitely will return.

Thank you for your comments, indeed Sebastopol is just a stones throw from Calistoga making it a quick and easy getaway on almost a moments notice. We are happy you enjoyed your spa experience in our boutique space, indeed small but difinitely we are able to transform your spa experience once inside. I'm also glad to hear you enjoyed your hotel stay. You mentioned the firmness of the mattress being a little too much for your taste, next time please ask for a pillowtop to be applied to the bed prior to your stay and we will be happy to accommodate. It is difficult to please everyone when it comes to the level of mattress firmness and most of our clients have wanted us to stay on the firmer side.
We look forward to your next visit, hope to see you soon!

Went here for a weekend getaway and enjoyed every moment of it!!! Clean, nice room with nice balcony overlooking the courtyard. Grilled out both nights in their bbq area, multiple hot tub/pool/mineral bath sessions, and slept like a baby after my spa visit. Fantastic!! You can walk 2 blocks for multiple restaurants, bars, and tasting rooms. My only complaint was the constant "reminders" given at the spa about gratuity. When we called to book the appointment, they went into a long explanation about what we needed to tip. When we went into the spa upon arrival to confirm our appointments, again another direct reminder. When we went for the treatment, a reminder upon entry and multiple signs everywhere. For this reason alone, I did not tip as much as I normally would have. I was a server/bartender for 13 years, I know all about tips and I found the constant reminders bordering on rude. I most likely would have given 30% as I usually do, but the constant schooling was kind of a drag and almost spoiled my mood at the spa. I must say though that our bath attendant and masseurs were fantastic!!! However, the spa must claim a portion of the tips from the attendants and therapists because the management seems to be relying heavily on them.

Room Tip: Rooms in the front overlook the tranquil courtyard.

William,
Thank you for your comments. I am happy that you enjoyed your time at our hotel and had fantastic spa treatments. In regard to your comments about the tipping for the spa, I appreciate your feedback. The spa has gone back and forth over the "reminder method" and we get different opinions from our clients. All too often we hear that clients were completely unaware that the cost of the massage doesn't include gratuity or a gratuity is appreciated if the experience was positive. Additionally, for your edification, management does not claim any tips received, all tips are distributed to the employees performing the services.
We look forward to serving you again in the near future especially since SF is such a quick trip away!

I have stayed here many times over the years. My sis and I used to try to make an annual trip to Napa and we would always stay here. I have met friends for a girls' weekend here, and it also made a perfect weekend Mother's Day present for Mom! Clean, simple rooms, nice vegetation everywhere, and (of course) the multiple hot pools are fabulous! Good price (for Napa). There is something really great about waking up, throwing on your swimsuit, grabbing a cup of coffee, and relaxing in the warm pools! It is right in town, it is a fun and safe place to walk at any hour. You can wander into town for all meals and the neighborhoods have quaint Victorian houses to check out. I just booked my next trip to Roman Spa for this summer! This time I am taking my husband, it is romantic here too!

Room Tip: I have never had a bad rooms here and have stayed on the ground floor as well as the second floor.

Thank you for your wonderful comments. Indeed, there is something special about sitting in one of the patio areas, sipping coffee, and enjoying the morning in your swimsuit! You mentioned "girls weekend" and we notice that is becoming a tradition for yearly get togethers by many of our woman. But it is also as you say, a romantic place to bring your significant other. In a few weeks we will be opening up our newly renovated building and 2 of the splendido suites have a jacuzzi tub for 2 piped with our natural mineral water, a shower for 2 with 2 rainhead showers as well as a single shower head, dual fireplace, and numerous luxurious amenities; the perfect romantic experience! We are sure it will be quite popular for those special occasions.

Thank you again and we look forward to serving you again this summer, with your husband.

We have been staying at the Roman Spa Hot Springs Resort for years. This place is too good to be true, but it is. The location is excellent, just two blocks from the main shoping area. Good resturants and best of all the food market, Calmart is excellent with salad bar, fresh everything. Our choice is a room with full kitchen. If there is a grillmaster in your family, the hotel maintains two spotless gas grills and a spotless charcoal grill. The property is large with lots of lush gardens, a indoor pool, outdoor pool and spa. The on site full Spa, with the callistoga mud baths and excellent spa services is a real plus. The best is always last, it is the staff. Many have been there for years, and the owners alway reinvest in their hotel. Love it.

Room Tip: We have stayed all over the property and have never had a bad room. Remember a room with a kitchen...

Phillip,
Thank you for your very kind comments and your continued loyalty to the Roman Spa. I'm glad you enjoy our kitchen rooms, indeed they not only provide additional space in the room, but as you mentioned our local grocer, Calmart does an excellent job of offering a wide variety of options for picnics, barbeques, and gathering for breakfast or lunch at our patio tables throughout the property. Our gas and charcoal grills are indeed quite popular and our housekeepers do keep them spotless by cleaning and scrubbing them every morning. I'm glad you enjoy our spa and our services, and your gracious comments about our staff are always appreciated. All of us at the Roman Spa are here to serve our guests, providing them with an experience that exceeds their expectations.
All of us look forward to your next visit.

We recently stayed 2 nights and loved it, great place to soak in quality hot spring pools, which thankfully contain only a minimum amount of chlorine. The hotel rooms do have a pedestrian, motel simplicity that will irk some, but we found our room to be perfectly adequate, the bed very comfy, and we loved the quiet ambience at night, which made for long, deep sleeps. At the end of the day, I'm at a spa hotel like this for the rest, health, and relaxation benefits, not for fancy hotel room frills. I saw a lot of older folks during our visit, regulars who have been faithfully coming to Roman Spa for years. We, too, hope to make regular future visits. Other notes: The hotel is perfectly situated just off Calistoga's main strip, lots of great dining options a stone's throw away. In many ways this hotel, its no frills simplicity is reflective of the laid back, Bohemian vibe of Calistoga, which is the antithesis of the more snooty, more expensive, more artificial feel of Napa town. If you appreciate this distinction, you'll have no trouble falling in love with a place like Roman Spa Resort. Oh, and we loved the palm trees and lush gardens surrounding the pools and property; you really are in a kind of oasis when staying here.

Thank you for your kind review. We are happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay and plan to return in the future. We strive to provide the type of experience you described, cozy, comfortable, and unpretentious. Although you describe a pedestrian, "motel" simplicity in our configuration, I do believe our garden filled surroundings with numerous small gathering areas, barbeque and picnic area provide a casual country ambience that a typical "motel" would not offer. Many of the properties in the Valley offer external entrances versus the big City internal corridors, a benefit most appreciate with our Mediterrean climate.
We look forward to your return and the ability to serve you on your next visit.
