“Rustic Relief”
Reviewed 11 July 2012

What a delightful discovery. We ( my daughters and myself) were looking for a moderately expensive, dog-friendly hotel or B&B with a pool . The proprietor at "Hideaway Cottages" referred us here as they did not accomodate pets. Many thanks to "Hideway Cottages" for steering us here and I am looking forward to staying there as well "sans" dog.

We stayed in Grandma's cottage ( 1/2 house), with kitchen, fireplace, two kings and a bathroom, behind the small, heated pool. It had a nice little deck surrounded by flowering plants adjacent to the main building ( office, dining room, library, game room). This place has a rich history as it was where the proprietor's grandparents lived. They were the original owners in 1913 and the entire property (various cabins, cottages and rooms in the lodge as well as farm, tennis courts, two swimming pools, mineral springs, creek) has been in the family since.

I would call it "rustic relief" because it was a nice escape from the bustle of the city and the sometimes pretentiousness of wine country. There were no tv's or telephones in the accomodations but there were plenty of opportunities to meet other visitors, play a game of ping-pong or tennis, splash in the pools or just enjoy the scenery. The hosts were friendly and relaxed. I've heard they cook a mean breakfast (which comes with your stay) or can whip up a delicious dinner for a fee in their spacious dining hall.

Unfortunately, we could only stay one evening and missed breakfast. However, we will be back again!

Room Tip: The accomodations have something for everyone. The cottages have bathroom with shower, kitchen and f...

Don't be put off by the long trek into the ranch property off of the main road. They even have a sign saying you are almost there. I must admit I wondered what I had booked (even after having been guided by favorableTrip Advisor recommendations) but the place was homey, the owners very personable and helpful and the breakfast fantastic. They still have some more work to do on upgrading rooms and if you are looking for luxury this is not the place for you. If you are looking for clean rooms, good company and peaceful surroundings this is it.
We were attending a nearby wedding with our grown children and this place fit the bill for proximity since there are few real hotels in Calistoga--lots of B&Bs.
We stayed in the main lodge but if I go again I will probably opt for the nearby cabins--they have others that are rustic and further out on the property but the lodge and nearby cabins have all the basic amenities.
We had more luggage than we should have because of the wedding and there is no elevator in the main lodge so the cabin could have worked a little easier. They have no TV but the internet works very well and we got decent cell reception. They have all kinds of games, heated pool, trails, farm animals etc. for things to do.
All in all this place exceeded our expectations and I would stay here again.

Room Tip: I would choose a nearby cabin if we do this again.

Mountain Home Ranch was a welcomed change from the usual chain hotel formula. The truth of the matter is that the buildings are old and the floors are crooked but the atmosphere is peaceful and warmly welcoming. The grounds are vast and very diverse -- a joy to explore. This would be an ideal place to teach your kids that food does not come from plastic bags at the grocery store and when you flush or throw something out, it goes somewhere else and becomes something else. I look forward to returning to this family owned/ecologically minded resort. Refreshing.

We wanted to not be in a crowded area and enjoy nature and her sounds. Well Mountain Home Ranch provided all this and more for us! Our cabin was rustic but toilet in the room! The price allowed us to visit the area. The owners are warm and friendly people who love and share their animals. It would be a wonderful family experience. Would definitely return.

We go to this place twice a year with our kids and look forward to it all year long - there is a lot for them to do while we talk and drink wine. There are animals to feed, and a pool to swim in. there are a few hiking trails, a pond, a library, pingpong table and tennis courts. The buildings are old fashioned camp style with a touch of hippie or grandma's house. Some have kitchens, some do not, some have bathrooms, some have shared bathrooms. The end of road location is priceless for feeling far away, yet there is cell phone coverage (and I believe wifi in certain areas but don't hold me to that). If you have a larger group, they will put on a dinner for you for a fee per person.
Can't wait to go back!

Room Tip: I like the ones with kitchen and bathroom - the owners can recommend which ones if you call. You wil...
