“Great Stay!”
Reviewed 2 August 2012

We stayed with our two teens over the week of July 4th and enjoyed this hotel very much. It is in a great location, being directly on the bay, but well off of the major highways. Our rooms were very clean, the beds comfortable, and the staff very friendly. The restaurant was fantastic! The buffet breakfast was wonderful to come down to, with a great variety of both hot foods and fruit and cereals and breads. Mark, the food and bev manager, and the chef treated us to an amazing cheese and fruit tray one afternoon while we sampled wines in the bar. Take advantage of all this hotel has to offer when you come to the Bay area.

Room Tip: Ask for the marina side rooms for the best views.

I'm writing this review, and I haven't even checked out yet. First of all, I love Hilton-brand properties, and this property is no exception. However, the Doubletree by Hilton Berkeley Marina really took the extra steps to make my stay exceptional... and I haven't even left yet.

1). The best part about this property? Stephanie Bauer, General Manager, and Kailee Flannigan, Guest Services Manager. Ms. Bauer is so courteous and friendly, and Ms. Flannigan greeted me upon my arrival, knew who I was, and I found out she is from my home-state. The beginning of my stay was completely personalized, warm, and inviting. This is the way EVERY hotel should be run, and I've never experienced a better beginning to a hotel stay than this one. You WILL love it here.

2). The property, itself, is sandwiched right between the Berkeley Marina (hence the name) and the Berkeley hills. It's beautiful. You can walk outside and smell the water on the brisk air. Even in July, it can get quite chilly, so bring a sweater. The grounds are so nice, and there are flowers and plants all over the place. There seems to be little paths everywhere between the four buildings on the property (this place is HUGE), so take some time to explore it. It's very pleasant and relaxing. I know some other reviews say that the property is too spread out, but after you figure out where all the buildings are (this can be really confusing at first), it makes you feel like you are staying at a resort rather than a DoubleTree hotel. I LIKE the fact that it's spread out. It's better that way because you feel like you have your own little place.

3). There are two pools, the main pool and the fitness pool. The fitness pool really seems to be the quiet one where people can come to relax and just unwind, while the main pool is the one that seems to be populated with families and children. It's so nice that there are two options here for those of us who want loud and fun or quite and relaxing. I, personally, would rename the fitness pool the tranquility pool for those seeking more of an escape.

4). My room is absolutely stunning. Best room I've had a stay in for a LONG time. In addition to the walk-in shower, the bathtub is rounded porcelain and is going to be a perfect for a long, long soak The carpeting is super-soft on the feet, and the amenities are just amazing. I have a dining room, a refrigerator, a coffee station, a living room with couch, tv, and table, an office area with a full size desk that looks out a window, a bedroom with a super-soft bed, and a bathroom that could qualify as its own room with a ceiling that goes up for miles and ends in a beautiful half circle window that provides great, natural light.. The balcony even has a partial view of the bay, but I have a feeling that most of my time is going to be spent in the living room and bathroom relaxing and enjoying what feels like a home away from home.

5). The restaurant is a bit pricey, but, fortunately, the pizzas are reasonably priced and worth it! The white pizza and barbecue pizza were sampled this evening and were very tasty. In addition, or waiter had a sense-of-humor and was incredibly accommodating and friendly. Spend one evening here for a great view of the marina's boats and get yourself a well-made pizza! You won't finish it all as it has a very generous portion size (you could easily split one pizza between two people). We brought ours back to the room for tomorrow.

6). Free transportation, anyone? This fine property has a shuttle that will take you anywhere locally, and it's going to save me lots of money on gas, car rental, taxi service, and buses. I have already gotten several good Groupons for use at local restaurants and sailings, and they will even take me to my business meetings for the week as this is a working vacation for me. The transportation bonus was the factor that pushed me over the top in staying here.

7). Warm cookies. Yes, every DoubleTree has them, but they really are that good. I was also provided two bottles of water upon check-in, something that wasn't necessary, but was an added touch that makes ALL the difference. What most hotels don't realize is that it is these small, inexpensive things that make you feel cared for, pampered, and attended to, and by making sure these things happen for their guests, this DoubleTree really shines.

To sum up, I appreciate the staff members attitude and the attention to detail that this property provides. The staff members REALLY DO love what they do; it's not an act, and it's not for show. They are happy in their jobs, and that only happens when the leadership within the hotel has created a fun environment to work in and has created a culture of care and concern where the little things that don't cost very much are implemented to make sure that a guest leaves with a smile and a want to come back again and again. So, thank you. :)

Room Tip: Building four seems to be the newer building. It looks great, and the flowers outside are very pret...

We liked it.
Stayed with kid in standard room with two double beds. Room is big enough for family with luggage. Furniture is good and new, I liked bed very much, good pillows, sleeping is very comfortable and linen is very soft...
Marina is very beautiful place, nice to walk, ride a bike, and also there is great famous playground in 10 minutes walk.
Also they have pool with very warm water and hot sparkling SPA tube.
Breakfast is average for Hilton, choice is neither big nor poor, typically american: eggs, bacon, ham, cheese, toasts, muffins, pancakes... We got coupons included in rate, so for us it was good.
My overall expression : good both for romantic getaway and weekend with kids.

Room Tip: Rooms with view to marina are quieter, but probably more exrencive. Other rooms face to parking, but...

Peter (who moved our bags for us) and Ali (who provided the perfect breakfast for each individual in our family) were top-notch, as was the front desk service in changing our room upon noticing that the room we were originally booked for would be inadequate for our family. Great job!

While the road leading up to the hotel needs some service (pot holes galore), the location away from the hustle-bustle of downtown Berkeley and Telegraph Avenue is perfect for a peaceful night's sleep, yet close enough to make visiting the city and the University a breeze.

There is an adults only pool (must be 13 years or older) as well as a family pool (for the rest of us who don't mind a little extra noise with the kids around).

Dan_L_72.....thanks for the wonderful sentiments about Peter and Ali!! A couple of "rockstars" who work for us! We love them too....
Great to read that our stellar front desk was quick with changing your room so you would feel more comfortable and truly enjoy your stay!!

We agree that our location is good for a "great nights" rest!

This hotel is located on a corner of the marina and opposite is the lauching off point for several dinner cruise boats. The hotel has a small front desk / lobby area in the main building which also houses the restaurant, conference rooms and an indoor pool. There is a nice patio and lawn facing the marina where the hotel holds barbecues or puts on events. The guest rooms are located in several adjoining buildings which are a bit of a walk from the frond desk. Better to check in and then drive to a parking spot closer to your room. The rooms either face the Marina/Bay or the parking lots.

We had a first floor marina room. There were great breezes from the bay with the door open. There is a fair amount of foot traffic on the pathway that led past our room, but it did not cause any issues. The room was a good size and appeared to be renovated. Bathroom was small but functional. The staff was friendly and helpful. There is a gym and another pool located in a building that is between the guest room buidlings and appears to be for adults only. The hallways in the guest room buildings were sparse and appeared a little worn out, but were clean with ice and soda machines located around the property.

Property is just a few minutes off of the highway and minutes from downtown Berkeley. All in all, it was a nice place to stay.

Room Tip: If you don't like people walking by your room and want a view, as for a higher floor facing the...
