“Shock to see it today”
Review of Telegraph Avenue

Telegraph Avenue

Owner description: Almost as if we haven't lost a moment of time... Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley is still so reminiscent of the 60's that you will feel as if you have traveled back in time when you visit Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley. The shops and eateries are a mix of quintessential hippie-dom mixed with the current U.C. Berkeley modern day student. Both seem to blend together in a medley that makes shopping and eating here almost a cultural or historical trek as well as a great shopping one.

We walked from our hotel to visit Telegraph Ave and were shocked to find so many stores boarded up and empty blocks where book stores such as Cody's once stood. It looked like a ghost town slum.

Telegraph avenue is student and aging hippie central. There are stands with tie die, jewelry and all manner of street vendor kitsch. There are some inexpensive places to eat on Telegraph and slightly off it, for example "The Asian Ghetto" which is an outdoor food court with mostly cheap Asian food just north of Telegraph on Durant. There are also a few record stores and lots of students.

Really the only thing on telegraph worth heading up there are the bookstores, and Ameoba if you are interested in music. Otherwise, it's too busy, too crowded, and too much crappy stuff sold for too much money.

It was fun to look at all the stalls and talk to the people who show their goods. It is so Berkeley. We loved it.

No, actually, that Mothers of Invention line was Frank Zappa's way of making fun of Upper Grant Avenue in San Francisco... Head shops and incense. But seriously, from Bancroft to Dwight near the UC Beserkely Campus is busy with homeless, students, artisans, and counterculture icons. In the Sixites it was more Protestor & Hippie-prone. Now, the City Council is trying to clean it up.
