Tongue is set in beautiful surroundings with both the Kyle (sea inlet) of Tongue and Ben Loyal (the one with four peaks) close by. The NW500 is a great piece of marketing for roads which have previously existed for decades and is driving up demand for accommodation, so booking in advance is advisable. Last year we got turned away as the hotel was full, so I booked in advance this year. You have to be aware that the options are limited in this area.

My room was spacious on the top floor and had a decent bathroom and I felt quite at home during my two nights' stay. The sherry decanter, bowl of sweets, tea/coffee-making facilities are all nice touches.

The restaurant offers a good menu, but my steak required excessive chewing due to the presence of so many sinews. This was due to the supplier rather than the cooking. All other courses were better on both nights. The portions are on the slightly smaller side of life, but certainly acceptable. Breakfast is good.

Would I stay here again? Well quite possibly, but I would also explore other options.

All in all, a good stop on the north coast, but not a "stunner". I do not know if there are "stunners" nearby.

Thank you for taking the time to review the Tongue Hotel I am delighted that you had such a good experience during your stay with us and that the team looked after you well.I am very pleased to read that you liked the menu and enjoyed your meals but like you; I was disappointed to hear that the steak did not match that same standard. We are very mindful of provenance and careful in our choice of suppliers so we shall certainly be extra vigilant with regard to this matter. We certainly hope it did not detract from an otherwise pleasant stay. Best wishes to you form Lorraine

The hotel is set in stunning scenery and has a special feel to it. The staff are helpful and attentive. The rooms are nicely appointed, with complementary sweets and sherry in the bedroom. The dining is of high quality and we can recommend the highland pork and duck parfait.

The only thing that let the stay down slightly was the out of date 14” tv with few channels and poor reception on those.

Thank you for your review. Its lovely to read how much you enjoyed the hotel, your room and all the wee touches! Those old TV's are certainly ready for a museum but they really will be gone for the 2019 season and I for one can't wait!
Thank you for the compliments you gave regarding your evening meal. We are very proud of the food we serve at The Tongue Hotel, we source really great local produce and then our kitchen team work hard to deliver something to genuinely savour. Be it a hearty bar meal, a handmade burger, a delicious steak dinner, an elegant duo of pork or a fabulous homemade dessert all are plated with care and pride. We very much hope that you will return again! Best wishes Lorraine

Night five of our NC 500 trip and we landed here
We reckon the best so far (and there has been stiff competition )
Lovely airy room. Huge bathroom with the best power shower so far. Great dinner or big succulent oysters and then juicy langoustines
Wonderful breakfast on piping hot plates. So big we couldn’t manage it all
A gem of a place

Wow! Thanks! Your wonderful review has made us blush! We really appreciate you taking the time to share with everyone how much enjoyed your stay with us. How amazing is the North coast seafood? The Kyle of Tongue oysters are superb ... we are certainly sitting in the middle of a fabulous larder! We hope you have a 'taste' for the place and that we have done enough to entice you back!
Best wishes Lorraine :)

We had a fabulous 2 night stay in a very generous ‘standard ‘ room. Staff were friendly and helpful and the food was fantastic. If you make it this far, stay here. The price looked high but it was really good value for money.

Ha ha we are indeed a long way from anywhere but this north coast is simply stunning and happily entices lots of folk to make it up to the extreme north coast! We are certainly glad you made the effort to ‘stop at the top’ We really appreciate your review and the recommendation made to others - we hope you will be back! :)

The hotel used to be a lords hunting manor. we loved the stone building, the gorgeous room, fireside and really timeless old age furniture. The hosts are from england and are lovely and give a great insight into the culture. This place is quirky and authentic. The bar area is lovely and homey and has a rustic feel. The restaurant food is divine. we loved how they use real ingredients that a great scottish grandma would use - ie real butter and cream ie and not cheap harmful processed seed oils/veg oils to cook our food. See dr.aseem malhotra (cardiologist) on vegetable oils. They had produce ie oysters from kyle of lochlach, all the produce was supplied locally and fresh and wholesome. The scottish porridge was made traditionally with water and salt (yum- lot healthier that processed breakfast cereals) with an option of a dram of whisky in it. they had locally produced meats and traditional fare on offer. so a healthy place to eat too. the walk to nearby castle after your big breakfast is recommended. I had local fish- lemon sole- yum. husband had grass fed lamb. starters were crab. dessert was clooty dumpling. from here we went to bettyskill to see museum on highland clearances.

Thanks so much! We are super pleased that you enjoyed stay with us! Meeting so many happy folk on their north adventure is the best bit of our job! It was lovely to see how utterly enthralled you were with the area and it’s was thrilling to see and hear how very much you enjoyed the authentic experience of our traditional Victorian Highland lodge. I passed on all your compliments to kitchen about how much you enjoyed their food and the local produce - particularly the local fish and the fabulous Kyle of Tongue oysters. I’m also delighted to hear that you enjoyed the Strathnaver Musuem at Bettyhill - I knew you would! I do think it’s a definite ‘must do’ if you come to this area. Best wishes to you both from Lorraine and David :)
