Schlosshotel Rosenau
Reviewed 5 July 2015

My family celebrated a wedding at Schloss Rosenau in late June and the experience provided by the venue overall matched the occasion wonderfully and to everyone's expectations. A special place and highly recommended.

The village
Where do you start? The magnificence of the place is not quickly described. This is not just a castle but a little integrated village with the castle at its heart and historically designed as such. To get a feeling for the place take a stroll up and down the road, passing the Residenz Hotel, the Meierhof and lake. The weather on the day (weekend), on and off light drizzle mixed with periods of sun shine, helped to emphasise the lush vegetation around the place as well as they countless and well managed rose bushes around the castle. There is very little traffic here, so a leisurely walk is the best way to inhale the peace and quiet of this place in the heart of the Waldviertel region.

The Schloss Rosenau
Margit, the Manager, created a welcoming, friendly and warm atmosphere together with her staff. It is obvious to see that she, ever present, and her staff work as a team towards a common objective. To give their guests an unforgettable experience. This shows in the quality of the food, friendliness of staff, the tastefully decorated and clean rooms and and well managed grounds and gardens.

The Room
We had a room in the Schloss itself, while others in the party stayed in the Residenz Hotel. The corner room was the Graf Schallenberg room at the second floor out back and with wonderful views of the lake on one side and the church on the other. The room is reachable via a large staircase as well as by lift. The room is spacious, beautifully decorated and and bed very comfy for a great sleep. Apparently the room with the best views in the Schloss.

The Restaurant
We arrived Friday evening for dinner, which was served in a separate private room next to the restaurant because of the size of our party. The menu included all local and seasonal dishes and were prepared superbly. We had such local specialities as Backhendl (fried chicken), Eierschwammerl (chanterelles) cream soup, Ravioli, Mohnnudeln dessert. All a treat. The day after the wedding we had breakfast in the main restaurant. The choice of breakfast foods is extensive and includes local meats, sausages, eggs, fruits, juices and most importantly a variety of excellent breads.

The Wedding
took place at the hall in the upper floor, which is magnificently decorated with paintings giving you a sense of being in a classic medieval palace in a past century somewhere like Venice or perhaps Rome. It was early afternoon and the light was perfect for the photographer to capture the atmosphere and the mood. Chairs were prepared for everyone to enjoy the ceremony seated. The subsequent agape took place in the adjoining main hall, which was prepared with standing tables and ample room for all to mingle and enjoy themselves and company. Finger food and drinks were served by staff who ensured that nobody went dry or hungry while staying in the background. The food was presented In a stylish and modern way in cups and glasses and above all very tasty. The main dinner at the evening was served at a function room with one long table and space for everyone. The food again was classic local dishes expertly made from the finest local ingredients by a chef capable of producing great tasting food.

My compliments to the Margit and her Team for creating such a memorable experience.

I am not used to this kind of luxus, and when my partner took me here, at first sight my breath caught in. It is beautiful, bright, with a nice terrace over the surrounding green.
I was astonished to see masons articles and gadgets for sale; but our room was silent, big, clean and with an interesting "open space"-concept where the bathtub and the shower were all in the same space as the bedroom.
There was music to play, all the possible toiletries you may need, glasses and a fridge.
There is also a small tv, though I wouldn't know what you need it for in such a place :)
The breakfast was big and tasty. My partner said it's "the most complete breakfast he ever saw". We could eat outdoors, in the terrace. I have no idea what he paid for a night there; It was definitely beautiful.

Room Tip: We were in the Residenz, in the "Eberesche" with windows right on the road - but we didn...

We stayed as part of a biking trip. The grounds were beautiful and the room spacious and exquisitely decorated. Our evening meal was delicious with great service. I wish we could have stayed longer!

I can't think of any other hotel that has these two distinct themes - Love and Masons.

The Hotel appears to cater to people who are looking for a romantic getaway. It is a large schloss (palace) built in the baroque style, and in a very remote location in Southern Austria. The setting is beautiful. The rooms have suggestive photos to put lovers in the correct mood. They even charge outrageous prices for internet access, because they want to discourage use while staying there.

But, on the top floor of this quiet romantic getaway is an old Mason Lodge, that has been converted into a museum to honor Austrian Masons. Very interesting museum if you are interested in the subject.

Altogether a very nice quiet hotel with some additional historic attractions.
