Owner description: Located in the small town of Pushkar in the Ajmer district of Rajasthan, The Pushkar Lake is one of the most prominent spots of pilgrimage as well as the site of the world famous Pushkar Fair. Encircled by numerous temples and ghats (bathing spots), the lake draws thousands upon thousands devotees every year to its threshold, to gain spiritual distinction and attain salvation by taking a dip in its holy waters. As the Kartik (Oct-Nov) month descends, the site becomes the focus of soulful devotion and pilgrimage as auspiciousness of this time is highly emphasized in Hindu sacred texts. At the same time, Pushkar Fair wonderfully exhibits the vibrancy of Rajasthan with exotic colors, dishes, dance, cattle fair and numerous entertaining contests and competitions. With amazing spiritual atmosphere, Pushkar Lake remains the site of timeless reverence and spirit.

Pushkar Lake may not too beautiful for sightseeing but a good place for you to walk around in the morning and afternoon. Take off your shoes and don’t take any flowers from any guy since you are there to visit, not to pray, and say No if they have asked you for flowers or anything else. Good place and don’t sit there too long in the evening because of mosquitoes (but it depends on you, it’s not a big deal after all).

Man made lake but non the less quite attractive, especially at sunset when many people gather. A bit hippy-ish, but this is also one of Pushkar’s attractions, if you are that way inclined. A very holy city, good market and overall attractive as it settles in a valley surrounded by hills.

This was a truly disappointing visit. Considering it is a Holy place and City, the lake is filthy. There was grime and dead fish. The entire lake area and temple, where non vegetarian food and alcohol is not available, is strewn with dirt. It’s a beautiful, unique place. If not the government of the local area, at least the local people can have it cleaned up. Eco systems are such that even if we just let the lake be, it will clean itself up. But by throwing pooja flowers we are just contributing to making it dirty. Very very sad indeed.

The Pushkar lake looks good and clean. In a vast desert it is amazing to see such large water body. But the thing that disturb one's inner conscience is the greedy attitude of the pandits. First they ask to take pooja thali for rs.10, then during the pooja ask you to make promise to pay more and if you don't, they start abusing you.
