We read a lot of nice reviews on this place, but when we were there it was disappointing. We were there in the low season I that was very clear. The place is beautiful and so are the little houses in where you sleep. But it was not very clean, we had no linnen so we used our own but there were a lot of bugs still.. The staff was not so friendly and the restaurant had a big menu but everything we wanted was not available so we had only three choices. But the place is great, it's not very expensive and you can hire scooters, wich is nice. Also it is not very handy that you can only get there by a boat that stops at 6 oclock. But the other side of the lake is great, so it's more that it is not handy when you have to leave to catch a train. By the way the internet was not working.

Dreadful place. The manager ignored us for ten minutes when we first arrived and when we finally got his attention he told us there were just 2 rooms left (there were 4 of us), a hut and a room. They were more expensive than comparable places and at the more expensive end of what they had but we were hot and tired. We looked at the hut and although it was dirty they said that it had not been cleaned and they would do so. We said we would take the rooms, but that we would like to go get a drink and check-in in an hour when the room had been cleaned. We left our bags with him.
When we went back to see the manager we were ignored for a while again, then we were told that the hut we had said we would take had now been given to another couple - we were livid. Magically however they did have another one now. We were shown it but again it was dirty. It was late by then and we felt we had no choice but to accept- however we were then told that this hut was more expensive! When we kicked up a fuss the manager tried to suggest that we had misunderstood him- we hadn't.
The hut was filthy, slime on bathroom floor, footprints in the dirt on the floor, ancient mosquito net, no insect netting in the eves or 'windows'.

But worst of all when we came back to the hut at night there were bed bugs crawling all over the bed. I slept in all my clothes and wrapped in my own sheet, all of which I had to insecticide the next day. My husband was bitten and dug the bed bug out of his skin to show the manager- the manager just shrugged.

Mowgli Guesthouse is one of the best places to stay on the other side of the river in Hampi. The owner and staff are very helpful and kind, the rooms from 100-1200 INR are very good value, the location with the restaurant is excellent (sunset view), the food plentyful, the rooms are clean.

Once a guesthouse is mentioned in the guidebooks some guesthouses just don't care to maintain their locality. I walked right into this trap at Mowgli's.
The (very numerous!) staff was friendly with the sole exception of the grumpy manager and the restaurant is perfectly located to chill out. Some bungalows with wonderful panorama over ricefields and the river.
The downside of Mowgli's has already been mentioned: Rooms not cleaned thoroughly, no bed sheeds, just an old blanket, no toilet paper, the sink was clogged, water is either cold or burning hot. The location is on the other side of the river from Hampi Bazaar with its famous temples. During my stay the level of the river was often too high to cross, therefore I was trapped at Mowgli's. For travellers who need to get away the only solution was an adventurous river crossing on a nutshell and a costly 50 minutes riksha-ride. I had better checked out other options before putting my bags down at Mowgli's as there are lots of cheaper and cleaner options in Hampi.

Mowglis was our splurge. 500rps a night, but worth it. We did share our room with a rather hungry gecko (who ate any bugs that dared to enter - so we were quite happy with him sharing ) and the odd praying mantis and frog. For some, that might not be acceptable, to us it was a bonus! The loaction was great - views of boulders and rice paddies is brilliant. The rooms were big, bathroom clean, showers were hot (I think our first one in 6 weeks!) and it was so, so peaceful after the busy, bustling towns. The food was great, though we did eat at Laughing Buddha also - which did film night and great banoffee pie if you were a little tired of curry! Endless games of sh*thead and riding the winding roads on scooters kept us happy. Find the resevoir and jump 8 (or if you're bloody brave 25) metre jumps into the water, though take note of the 'Beware of crocodiles' sign! ;) I almost forgt - one of the highlights of my trip - Laxmi, the elephant. Visit her at the temple - give her a banana and she'll bless you. She's well looked after and seems happy with is great! Beautiful creature. Definately worth a stay. x
