“Lovely camp; only drawback was the far away bathroom”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 April 2012

Lots of perks: people were friendly, views great, food good, rooms clean and comfortable, easy access to gorilla trekking, bottomless coffee (that was not instant!) available anytime, eco-friendly, etc. The only drawback was that the bathrooms were a fair ways from some of the rooms and the nighttime walks were cold! Bring warm clothes. It gets chilly up here!

We walked there from Buhoma (and spotted a few Gorillas on the track) and it was like coming home, so welcoming and warm were the staff and people of this community. And the facilities are top notch not five star but the pride and attention to detail is obvious everywhere. We upgraded to the cottage and it was 5 star. Food was great, staff great, Location great... do your self a favour and stay there.

Room Tip: All are good but the bigger cottage is sensational.

The Nkuringo camp is located about 12 hours drive from Entebbe, Uganda or 5 hours drive from Kigali, Rwanda. My husband and I went there by first driving to Buhoma, Bwindi (about 10 hours drive from Entebbe), and then trekking from Bwindi to Nkruingo (which took us about 7 hours). The trek itself was very enjoyable but quite full on, especially towards the end where we ascended a steep slope of 700 meters. A porter is highly recommended. Also, our guide Asgario is the warmest and happiest man we have encountered in our 4 weeks in Africa.

At Nkuringo Gorilla Camp, we stayed at one of the new budget rooms and were very happy about it. The room is clean and spacious, and is decorated by beautiful photos (taken by the camp owner Robert) of a gorilla member of the Nkuringo family group. One particular thing we love about the camp is that they are trying to make a difference at the local community by building a school, community library, a community pub etc, and employing villagers to work at the camp. Another thing we like about Nkuringo is that there are no mosquitoes in the area because of the high altitude.

As we were staying at a budget room, we had to share the shower and bathroom facilities which are located about 30 second walk from our room. It is usually not a problem but can be a pain if rain starts pouring down. The camp has two shower rooms and two toilet rooms and the shower was great as far as a campsite goes. Most other camp sites we have been to only give you a few minutes of warm water but at Nkuringo, we had good water pressure and plenty of warm water. The camp does not offer shampoo, conditioner and soap, so do remember to bring some along with you.

The toilets took a bit to for city dwellers like us to get used to. They are Eco toilets and there was neither a flush nor sand for covering. Rather, the staff at the camp cleaned the toilets regularly. Surprisingly, the toilets do not smell. We presume they use some kind of technology to stop the smell from building up.

There is no tea/coffee making facilities in the room but you can get those anytime at the camp restaurant. The camp does not offer complimentary bottles of water so you will have to buy at the restaurant for drinking and rinsing purposes.

The meals at the camp were good especially the potato soup. The staff at the restaurant were very nice. Even though we had our pack lunch, the staff cooked us some nice soup when we came back early after the gorilla trek. That was exactly what we needed after an exhausting uphill climb.

As for the gorilla trek, the camp made it much easier by lending us their walking sticks, and providing complimentary laundry after our trek. We enjoyed visiting the Nkuringo gorilla family and we were told that they are the most relaxed group at Bwindi. It took us only about 30 minutes to locate them and during most of the time we spent there, the gorillas were right in front of us. The young gorillas came up to us and touched our legs. That was just amazing.

Lastly, the views at the campsite were superb on a clear day. At one side of the camp you can look down at the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and at the other, you can see various volcanoes at a distance (one of which was erupting whilst we were there). These volcanoes are at the borders between Uganda, Congo and Rwanda.

It all started when I searched for gorilla’s tracking permits. I approached a number of different agencies and operators. Robert emailed me immediately taking the initiative to call me to provide me with all details about the process. He wasn't asking for anything. Just to assist. We were shocked by his generous willingness to help. We then heard the story of an Englishman falling in love with Africa in general and Uganda in particular. Having read the previous reviews at TA, we decided that we are in. We are in for the experience of a walking safari. In Entebbe we met with Lydia, the second pole of this magnificent triangle of Nkuringo Gorilla Camp. She hosted us in their offices downtown Entebbe and took hours of her time to plan with us a round trip to the west of Uganda, highlighted by the walking safari. Today, a couple of weeks later, we consider Lydia to be a family member. Having spent a night with Emma down in Kisoro, we started the climb a day after being guided by Richard. What an amazing and a knowledgeable guide. He not only introduced us to all geographic, ecological, natural and historical aspects of the track but was so open as to introduce us to his own life in Uganda. This helped us to catch the breath while climbing as he was doing most of the talking. When we arrived at NGC we met with Asgario for the first time. He is the third pole; the arrow head. Well this is where Asgario was born so he is familiar with the area to the inch level. But this is not all. You must ask Asgario to take you to his community. This is when you really get to absorb some flavors of his personality. Asgario, above all and beyond any business incentive, is dedicated to his community. He is one of the funniest guys you will be talking to. And then comes the lodge. We opted for the lazy camping alternative. The scenery at this summit is unbelievable. The food and staff were so generous and fulfilling. The facilities, showers with hot water, washrooms and campsite yard are so nicely kept and allow you to get a real rest in between the different walks. This should be your choice whenever you are in the area of Bwindi.

Great Service, friendly staff, fantastic location, good food - nothing was missing.

This is a really very special place. The comfortable charming lodge is located on top of the highest hill with a fantastic round view. It is run by committed staff which made us feel at home as from our arrival. It is not one of the unpersonal, artificial and stylish so called 5 star hotels but a place to enjoy the nature, to be in contact with the local community, to learn about the way of life in this wonderful remote corner of the world.

The lodge is built as a camp, fitting perfectly in the natural environment and in harmony with the nature. We occupied the two self contained houses which are new, clean, comfortable and high standard accommodation.

The walking safari organized for us and our 3 kids (10/12/14 years) - including the boat trip offered by the Nkuringo Staff - was certainly a very special and unique experience and as easy (but much more exiting) as walking in the Swiss mountains – a MUST DO for everybody visiting Uganda.
